Just a Question - What email client(s) are you using on W7

I use Yahoo and Gmail. I also have a very private 1&1 webmail account. Oh, yah, I guess I have a hotmail account too which is my 'passport'.

The one thing that WLM sees is it's own messenger option instead of AOL or others. Plus with a Live Mail account you don't see the spam while a few MS letters come in unless you hand out the address at some 3rd party site.

Your usual ISP on the other hand loves to pass along? things where you suddenly start seeing Craig's list, work at home, ink world, and every other dimwit spam ad they can toss into your account on the mail server.

MS has that covered in a different way if you elect to install the messenger with a new popup window for news and everything else rolled up there that places itself right smack in the way once you first sign in and go to the prompter. Gets you to look! :sarc:

If you are new to using a messenger feature of any type you first have to get used to not pressing the enter key until you are finished typing! That sends on the spot unlike email where you can edit that before clicking on send.

You also have a set of emotions you can add in with any text. Voice chat for those on dial-up of course.

Not liking Windows Live Mail I use Windows Mail for Newsgroups and a backup email client but Incredimail Premium is my main email client. It's the only one I've found that notifies me of new mail via the taskbar without the need to have it running.
I use it in XP, Vista and now Windows 7.
I also have various webmail accounts setup here and there.

I use Thunderbird with multiple email account across multiple Operating systems (my Thunderbird profile is on my data drive and one edit when re-installing an OS brings back everything.). Basically I get an identical Thunderbird view including all my add-ons and rules etc from three current windows installs on this machine.

I did use Live mail for my LIve address but since the changes in January this too is now in Thunberbird

I like the idea of that mate! You may well convert me back to Thunderbird!!

What exactly did you do mate? It's just that I use a hard drive caddy in my system and I'm always checking out other OS's on my second removable drive. So it would be smashing if say I could have Vista on that drive with Thunderbird set up on that too, so I could check my emails on there without worrying about not being able to see the same email on the original hard drive! ( if you follow me! lol )

First set up your thunderbird and all your accounts so that you have a client working as you want it.

Next find your profile information folder, its normally in the hidden user Appdata area
C:\Users\{username}\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird

the folder name will consist of some random characters with the extension .default

Copy this to the data location you require (on a separate data drive

Next open the profiles.ini file

C:\Users\(username\AppData\Roaming\Thunderbird\profiles.ini

and edit to point to your new location

You can now delete the original location to save space

All sorted, and also tested out on 2nd drive. Worked perfectly!
So I am now going to announce that I have been forced to leave Windows Live Mail and go back to Thunderbird. Excellent stuff mate, well pleased. So useful!!

Ah bliss.... no more 'backing up'!! Fantastic!
Done what you said and backed up the one small profiles file too.
I've got Windows 7 x64 build 7057 on my main drive ( in the caddy ) and Windows 7 x64 build 7048 on my spare 2nd drive. So I put that in. Copied over the backup up profiles.ini file, and ta daaaa... all my email appeared! PERFECT! I love stuff like this. Right bloody nerd! lol.

FWIW:

I use a similar method for my email and Firefox profiles (and, to a limited extent, my Opera profiles, as you cannot have a completely 100% independent location for *everything* profile related in Opera) on a completely separate drive than my system drive.

When installing a new OS, I install Fx, then run Fx with the -ProfileManager command line switch so that instead of creating a default profile, it starts without creating a profile and let's me choose the profile. I then tell it where my current profiles are and the names.

Also, you can create your own profile *locations* pretty easily - the methodology is quite simple:

{An 8 random character name}.{profile name}

is the methodology used - so I got 'creative' with mine - all my profiles are

cr34t1v3.{profile name}

where {profile name} is 1 of the following:

• Shiretoko
• Plain
• Test

Now, I can hose my system drive all I want to and every time I reinstall, I have access to all my bookmarks, settings, extensions, history, etc - just like before.

Same applies to Thunderbird. I have mail archived in Tb as old as 1998 (well before I started to use Tb - those came from Eudora).

I am entertaining to go with a purely portable solution as Nigel already has done, but then I have to make backups of that thing manually - Or, I am considering moving all my current mail onto one of my GMail accounts and start using IMAP with GMail - so I have access to it 24/7 also. Nigel's method is a bit better in terms of me being able to literally view my email anytime *using Thunderbird* without having Internet access, but the GMail and IMAP thing is better in that I can also use smart devices like my phone to look through my email online without having a computer present at all....

At any rate, the whole profile thing is pretty easily managed if you do a small bit of reading over at MozillaZine Knowledge base.

Hello JohnG,

I didn't actually say in my previous post but my two main email accounts (or more precisely groups of email addresses) are with Googlemail and GMX.com both of which are running on IMAP so I too can access them when I'm not on my PC.

I also run a copy of Thunderbird portable on a USB stick and use Microsoft's Synctoy to synchronize it's profile with my main profile if i'm going away for a while without the laptop.

With the laptop I have thought of mapping my profile from the desktop and using make available offline but not sure how the sync would be.

Don't use a phone for email but do synchronize my contacts and calender with Thunderbird using Myphonexplorer (FJ Software Development), which I would recommend to anyone with a Sony Ericsson Phone

For synchronizing contacts, I use Welcome to BitPim - thus I don't have to use a cable, works OOB with BT and since I store all my special folders in all Windows builds on a separate HD, as soon as I have installed the OS, moved my locations back to the second HD and then install BitPIM, I am ready to go with all my old contacts, SMS messages (I have every one saved from over a year ago) and call logs (same again).

Just watch out for the built in adwares. Free screen savers and wallpapers? Magentic - Free wallpapers & screensavers That is added to the desktop right off once installed. The mail window is made to look like WM or Outlook Express.

Cartoon notifiers or elect the none option.

@Barman58 : I have a Sony phone but I can't install Sony Driver on Windows 7, so I can't use MyPhoneExplorer. Have you found a way to do it ? :sarc:

You wouldn't believe how well that was received here even after seeing an ISP change! With the old one the OE or WM inbox filled up fast with "spam"! Despite having used OE for that account for a long time the spam out of nowhere despite block after block of domains seems to have been ISP allowed!

The new ISP doesn't have any preassigned email accounts but like all the rest the free online provider. A brand new one without even havinhg given that out seeing spam too?! Live for me along with one or two totally spam free online accounts. thank you!
