Just got broadband on laptop, why do i need a router? i use ethernet

Hi folks, i just got a broadband connection via an ethernet cable but keep reading routers are essential for security, i never use wireless so what kind of router do i need for best security. I also never have anything else using my connection , it's always just me.

You may already have a combination modem/router provided by your ISP. If so, nothing else is needed. I have AT&T service and they furnished this:

The owner instructions should let you configure the modem/router for optimum security. Again, using AT&T as the example, I can go into my modem/router and access this:

Thanks for the reply. Actually the modem says Smart RG SR350N and on the front it shows a power light, a DSL light and 4 more lights reading Lan 1,2,3 and 4 but thats it. It doesn't say router anywhere on it and it didn't come with instructions.

According to this (providing I looked up the right unit) you should be able to use it as an Ethernet or DSL gateway, and it includes a router and firewall.

Most routers include a firewall and this adds an extra layer of protection in addition to the firewall provided with the OS. Good security has multiple layers of protection. Any one layer could be circumvented but 2 or more layers makes this much more difficult.

OK, another question, #1, what is the difference between an ethernet and a DSL gateway and i don't know what to choose regarding workgroup, public and homegroup. It's set on public at the moment

I actually have three questions, should i use a VPN or do you think i'm adequately protected , i have Kaspersky AV and run Malwarebytes and SAS as on demand scanners . I run scans daily

I only have one laptop and live alone with just a standard broadband connection.

DSL modems and wireless gateways perform different but complementary roles in a home or business. A DSL modem provides a connection to the Internet, but it can only do this for a single computer unless additional hardware is used. A wireless gateway connects to a DSL or other broadband modem, allowing it to serve multiple users through wired or wireless network connections.

Personally, I'd leave everything set on "public" since you're using only the single computer. Workgroup and homegroup imply multiple computers on either a work or home network.

Yea or nay to a VPN - good question. A VPN offers additional security but sometimes at the cost of reduced computer speed. And free VPNs may give you a lot of ads through banners at the top of your screen or occasional popups. I trust my installed anti-malware software for most day-to-day computer usage (checking emails, working with a Word document, viewing a YouTube video, etc.) But I turn on a VPN when I'm visiting my bank, doing online shopping with a credit card, etc. My VPN of choice is Hotspot Shield free version.

Your very helpful and i think i got it now. Funny you mention "Hotspot Shield " because that is one VPN that is said to actually increase speed .
