just run as administrator?

Hello forum:cool:

Well, the only thing I DESPISE:mad: about Windows 7 is those damn PERMISSIONS! I feel like I'm back running Windows 95 (or was it 98? ) again. Thing is, I STILL can't figure it all out! SO, instead of tearing my hair out after messing around with inheritances and sharing and all of THAT bologna, I just decided to login as the Administrator (which I thought I WAS anyways?:sarc:). Well, now, of course, I can't login directly when I boot, I have to choose Administrator before 7 loads. What I want to know is, should I just delete my original profile I originally set up so Administrator just boots up right away since that I what I login and use now anyways, or will that do something weird again to my original profile where I can't get into THOSE folders? Also, can anyone explain to me WHY in God's name they even HAVE all of those permissions (or decided to bring them back) when it is MY PC and I should be able to do WHAT I want WHEN I want to? It just seems so ridiculous and pointless?

Your account has admin privs.....but you go through the UAC system to take advantage of them.

Rather than disable the security that is there to protect you and the box, why not post what problems you are having and see if any of us can help you with the issues???

I'm not having problems running what I need with a standard user account and UAC on.

Ok, maybe I was wrong about the version, I just remember having the same problems a long time ago with a different version of Windows. There are several folders that are have a lock on them and when I try to access them I get this message: (Header) Location is not available (message) C:\System Volume Information (* or whichever folder it is) is not accessible. Access is denied. So, then when I go into the security tab, it will show different Groups or user names and then thats where the fun starts. Even though most of the time it looks like I SHOULD have permission to open the folder. I'm not the only one who has trouble with this BTW, there are a lot of other people who are complaining about this.

Just in my Documents and Settings folder ALONE I cannot access: Application Data, Cookies, Local Settings, My Documents, NetHood, PrintHood, Recent, SendTo, Start Menu and Templates? This is what I mean. However, here the folders DO NOT have a lock on them, so what is happening here?

All those folders are fake, delete or ignore them. I'm not wasting my time re-explaining them over and over again.

Ok, so I try to go into Application Data. Can't. Then I go into security. It shows Group or user names: Everyone, SYSTEM, Administrator (Stratman-PC\Administrator), AdministratorS(my capital) (Stratman-PC\Administrators). Now, how do I get this folder so I can open it?

You don't open it, the real location is AppData.

So basically you're just telling me that Windows 7 has all of these folders that no one needs for anything?

That still doesn't explain why when I go to into AppData (the one you say I should), Local, I cannot access my Application Data, History, and Temporary Internet Files??? Are these fake as well? I would like to understand what is going on. If you say you "don't want to explain everything again" you must have explained it somewhere? Could you link me please so this can stop being so aggravating for me?

Everything hidden folder that denies you access is but a junction that is there for backward compatibility.

Local Settings\Application Data = "C:\Users\Logic\AppData\Local"
Local Settings\History = "C:\Users\Logic\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\History"
Local Settings\Internet = "C:\Users\Logic\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files"

stratman.

they are locking them for a reason. Even if you are the super admin. even if you change the permissions. the locked folders are just place holders for app install. the applicaion is replaced by app data, etc. think of it as a pointer. if you change it or move it, you will break something.

Sometimes you just gotta go with Microsoft on some of these changes and accept the fact that things aren't always going to be the way that they used to be. Glad you guys got all this sorted out.
