Just turned it on, already I hate it...

The Dell 9020 (https://www.sevenforums.com/hardware-devices/424287-opinions-these-refurbd-desktops-new-post.html) arrived today. "Hate it" is an overstatement, the machine itself looks fine, but on 1st boot the Win10 it shipped with is demanding I set up a "microsoft account" before I can even open the OS insisting I enter a "MS" email address (tried an anonymous Proton email, which, of course, it won't accept). No. I DO NOT want to "set up an account." I have run 10 before, never encountered this. Anyone know a way around this? In the mean time, I'm going to connect one of my wn7 ssd's and see how that runs.

Why doesn't this surprise me? No product anymore is just that PRODUCT OR SERVICE. Everyone's trying to WEASEL something.

Thanks!

No need to disconnect. In my experience, when you get to the page asking you to login or create a MS account to "enjoy the full Windows experience" there is a button in the lower left part of the screen labeled "Limited experience". Click on that and you'l breeze right on thru the rest of the setup.

I have systems setup with both a local account and an MS account. They both work the same, not sure why some are so adamant that they will not create an MS account but regardless, MS doesn't absolutely require it.

I'm sorry to hear the arrival of your refurbished Dell OptiPlex 9020 hasn't been a good experience.

There's no need for you to create a Microsoft account during setup.
Click Offline account in the lower left of the screen, then click Limited experience in the lower left of the next screen that appears.

All of the refurbished 9020's that I purchased advertised an Intel Core i7-4790 3.60 GHz processor.
One of them came with a slighter slower Intel Core i7-4770 3.40 GHz processor, but I decided to live with it and avoid the hassle of repacking everything and returning it.

Just to add here, you hate the OS, not the hardware.

Also, Protonmail is NOT as secure as you think unless you create and access the account correctly. And if you pay for the bridge with Bitcoin, that has to be done just right as well. LOL I have four Protonmail accounts and the bridge. So far they seem like they do what they preach, but I always keep my distance from things and not have absolute blind trust in anything.

If the hardware there has Win 7 drivers, I'd just format that crap and install Windows 7. Of course you'd need a product key. It's not really recommended I guess from a public's eye security stand point, but you can still use 7 now without issue as I am and will do so for the foreseeable future until I'm good and ready to use 10. Right now I have Win 10 LTSC installed in VMware and just going through all that. Without making a long story, the fact you can't even place a My Computer or My Documents on the desktop is just stupid as all hell. No, you have to go to those folders under 'This PC', right click the icons and place them in your task bar. The hell??? Did I mention this OS pours more IPs out of it than the dihydrogen monoxide at Niagara Falls?

Also with Win10 a repair install has to be with the current version that is on the computer. Not as Win7 is.

I guess it goes without saying that periodic full disk clones would be very prudent in case of a SHTF situation.

Yes. As a matter of fact, I did 2 installs of Win 10 2004 this week. I created local accounts on both of them and kept the network connection enabled. Had absolutely no problem making it all the way thru the setup on both. As stated previously, I encountered a screen that prompted me to login or create an MS account but was able to bypass that by clicking the button labeled "Limited experience" in the lower left of that screen.

I did the install using a USB stick created with the MS Media Creation Tool downloaded from MS.

The only "nag" I encountered was the first time I opened File Explorer. A box appeared telling me that if I created an MS account, I could then have OneDrive with free 5GB of storage.

Better safe than sorry.
I posting that about Win10 for information purposes. Knowledge is very important.

Just wanted to say that since you and everyone else here and on other tech forums are mentioning this, I'm sure Microsoft will have this feature removed in a future update. :D Just a guess...

Actually, now that I think about it that may be hard to do unless you slipstream current updates to the install media prior to installation.

Conspiracy theories abound!

The button labeled "Limited experience" apparently works for many people. I think it's because of human nature, who would purposely choose "limited experience" over "full experience"?

I just done a Windows 10 initialisation on an Acer Notebook. I completed the requested Microsoft options offline, then before the initialisation process would proceed, I was prompted to complete an Acer registration, and had to provide my email for that purpose (even though I was offline at the time). I expect to receive an Acer confirmation email, after I put the device online.

I'm waiting for the Media Creation Tool for Version 2010 Build 19042 to be released by Microsoft so I can create install media and do a clean install of Windows 10 Pro 64-bit in one of my Dell minitowers.

I've never had to create a Microsoft account and implement it as part of the install process, and hopefully that hasn't changed.

It's only Home that has had the offline account option hidden if you set it up while online. Pro has always offered it (albeit in small print in the bottom left corner).

Got the "new" refurb today, still not the original specs (was supposed to be i5 4670 @3.2, the first one delivered was i5 4570 @ 2.9, this one's 4570 @ 3.2, which still rubs me the wrong way, but I've decided to keep it, probably no real world difference). Came w/10 home, was able to "set up an account" so I could actually OPEN the bloody OS, using the process at Confirmed: Windows 10 Setup Now Prevents Local Account Creation which went fine. The machine is way faster than my old one, which has in addition to slowing speed been showing weird issues connecting with my 5 drives, WE keeps crashing, etc., so not a bad replacement for the $$$$ ($277 w/tax & shipping). Now all I have to do is either get my current SSD w/7 pro to run in the refurb (it opens, boots & does "run", but of course none of the things like existing video drivers work w/the Dell hardware, have to either update all that or just reload the OS from scratch. Fun, fun FUN!

I want to thank everyone who helped me with this selection process, and put up with my grouchy olde farte disposition. You have all been very helpful & supportive, and I appreciate it very much!
