so i hear Kaby Lake and Zen isn't "compatible" with anything older than Win 10, but what does that mean?

will everything still work, but you just wont get any security updates via windows update?
or will they cripple it so it wont even boot?

i also heard that intel/AMD wont provide any chipset updates, but that should be fine right?

It means that on Kaby Lake or Zen you wont be able to install other OS than Win 10 or Linux.
It's Windows death sentence.

ouch, thats harsh

an aside; when you OC a CPU, do you also OC the memory? is it the same case for both AMD and intel?

No, you do not have to OC the memory.

I really don`t think it`s the Caby Lake cpu, it`s the 200 series chipset.

Because you can use a Caby Lake cpu on a 1151 socket. And if that`s the case it`ll run 7 no problem.

Still researching :)

Who knows when KL will actually launch  Late December / Early January 2017

ohh its the chipset that's doing this? im thinking of buying the 6700k now as an insurance policy. i really want to stick with win 7 and hopefully hastily building a Skylake system now will buy me time and let me wait out win 10 until i can "rejoin" the party when m$ decides to be less pushy with their spyware in the future.

btw, isnt skylake-c cancelled?

One can't predict future, but in my opinion there's a lot of FUD in this regard. Someone sees title "Win7 not supported..." and without reading any further spreads false info (not related to this thread). Please read this:

I also read a lot on the net, but I know nooooothing.
I do get a hair on the back of my neck that does stand up when reading what Intel is or is not going to do.
As far as I know Intel has not made a official statement of what and why things will change.

What my unsolicited thoughts are/is this.

Intel is trying to stay on the good side of Microsoft with their wet dream of W-10. Yet they also want to keep other users and hardware manufactures happy also. Intel does not want to loose one market to gain a new market.
Intel wants, some how to have both W-10 market and other operating system markets "Windows 7".
Microsoft is looking at the W-10 market.
Intel is looking at all markets.

Just my thoughts.

Jack

that would be the wise thing for a company to consider/do, but the CPU market is basically a duopoly between AMD and intel and they are both playing ball with m$ at this point. hell even qualcomm is in on this......

more reason why i want to buy a 6600k/6700k now as an insurance policy....... i can only hope its the CPU that's pulling this shenanigans and not the mobo, otherwise i wouldve wasted my money on the skylake when i couldve gotten kaby :D
