Win 7 Home Premium Dell Optiplex 745 BSOD & White&Orange&Green&Black

Hi everyone,

I'm an old user from the 1990's that seen the awful control and spying coming with Microsoft OSs and have done what I could to hold off after Microsoft took over my Windows 8 machine and made it a Windows 10 over night, literally I woke up to it updating. Arggg. It made it unusable.

I currently have 2 Windows 7 machines, the one with Win 7 Home Premium is the issue. Over a year ago I installed a new motherboard as my older one had some sketchy capacitors. (Wondering if the old MB NIC component can be used to replace the one on the new MB - see below.

A few days ago it would throw a blank screen (not the BlueSOD with no text, and lock up). At first after it boot normally it would be OK for awhile and everything seemed fine. Event viewer did not have see any error precipitating the hard boot I had to do except for this:

Broadcom NetXtreme 57xx Gigabit Controller: The network link is down. network cable IS properly connected.
Source: b57nd60a
Event ID: 4
Level : Warning

Now she boots up in normal for only a minute or so and locks up. At the moment I can boot in safe mode only for longer.

Dell Optiplex 745
Intel Core 2 Quad Q6600 2.4GHz
8 GB Memory
Win 7 Home Premium 64-bit
140 GB HD

I am totally hardwired, no wireless at all (EMFs make me quite ill). I unplugged the Ethernet cable that goes to a Netgear Router WNR 2000v3 then to the DSL modem. Yes, I have only 3 Mbps DSL as I live very, very rural.

I'm sorry for this post being so disjointed, can the network error cause the system to lock and if so can that component be replaced? Would I need soldering skills? Or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I'll try and answer any questions. Thanks in advance for any help.

I got the DM bug collector and had to get the file there by thumb drive. It ran and the first thing it said was:
Copying mini dump files - The system cannot find the file specified.

There is nothing in the c:\windows\minidump folder.

Thanks much. What does "and from the MS catalogue kb947821" mean?

I searched for that KB but it's not on my system. I shut off windows update on this machine when I got it. Don't ask me how, I did a few changes a while back.

I'm running the sfc /scannow now.

SFC /scannow came back with: 'Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.'

Just to make sure we're on the same page, I am in Safe Mode and I do not have the Ethernet Cable attached to the PC.

I am now getting a lot of errors in event viewer. I am running another DM Bug Collector and will link the file here after my DSL connection gets it uploaded to google drive. This 2nd attempt still has the same error that it cannot find the windows\minidump\*.dmp file.

Thank you. I got the KB installed on the machine, re-running sfc /scannow again.
Yes, I can run in safe mode with networking.
I get the BSOD when I try to boot normally right after it loads the desktop.

The sfc /scannow came back as above with 'SFC /scannow came back with: 'Windows Resource Protection did not find any integrity violations.'"

I ran a chkdsk /f and I got these two errors:
deleting an index entry with Id 4258 from index $SII of file 9
deleting an index entry with Id 4258 from index $SDH of file 9

I rebooted and seen the added reboot options and chose with debugging. It booted normal and is sitting at the desktop and seems steady. Crossing my fingers.

Nope, I tried to go into Event Viewer and the screen went black and the keyboard locked up.

I went to get the logs and seen they were dated 10/25 which is before I ran the KB file. When I ran it as administrator, it did say 'extraction complete.' But when I search for it under programs it's not in there. ?? So I re-ran it, still not there. I'm running in safe mode. There were a few to choose from so I chose the most recent one for windows 7 x64 bit.
This is the first file in the list that I ran:
windows6.1-7601-x64-neutralcab_9f743bfbc48e6e7ee89260b3349eaf36eb425c4c.exe (SHA1: n3Q7+8SObn7okmCzNJ6vNutCXEw=) (SHA256: i4YK4g74/vth5BYvbiH8hk4vjqGGAuKZ2T4p9zVSUPo=)

I also just ran the:
checksurpackage_f3f05923c10e732ff623bbb88cbdb4846b657a7f.exe (SHA1: 8/BZI8EOcy/2I7u4jL20hGtlen8=) (SHA256: eZl6rJ3kFmVbNm5TdFwMO5pTGellr+u1GcBVCYJuJlo=)
What am I doing wrong?

Thanks so much for helping me.

My last KB updates are from May 2016. I turned off windows update on my machines after Microsoft updated another machine to windows 10 in the middle of the night.
My Win 7 service pack is 1.

Is that why the KB isn't installed?

"also see you have Revo installed

I updated Revo and uninstalled all HP programs and the printer.
Revo did not find Edge or flashintegro to uninstall.

OK flashintegro is VSDC which I uninstalled with Revo. Sorry about that.

After uninstalling flashintegro/VSDC I restarted in normal and it ran for about 2-3 minutes, then I got a blank pink screen and keyboard locked up. First time for pink.

HI
ooops missed out a bit of the line

c/windows/logs/CBS/checksur

this KB is a hybrid.... runs once and "dissappears", like i said you can keep it and rerun it at anytime
please try this link

http://download.windowsupdate.com/d..._cc4a605bcda8288af75983312e8fb25367e98fdd.msu

Thanks.
I DLed the KB on a thumb drive, and copied it to the machine.
It started to run but then threw an error:
Installer encountered an error: 0x80070422
The service cannot be started, either because it is disabled* or because it has no enabled devices associated with it.

* I think this error is because, like I said above, I know enough to be dangerous and I disabled stuff a few years ago so updates wouldn't run. I have no idea what I did or how to undo them or where to look. I have a vague memory of changing some registry values, maybe. I'm sorry for this added headache.

I went into Services and Started windows update and got the error:
error 1084: This service cannot be started in Safe Mode

I'm going to try and boot normal and see if I can get it started.

Nope, got another pink screen.
I'm restarting services, following Duck.AI instructions (crossing fingers it's not daydreaming :-)~

- - - Updated - - -

Hi Torchwood,

I tried fixing windows update with the use of Duck.AI. I'm not sure how successful it was because I still cannot install the KB .msu file you shared with me.

Somewhere along the way I lost the added boot selections that I had before for debugging. How do I get that back?

I am re-running the dm log collector.exe right now and will upload that if that will help since I've attempted to fix things myself.

Here's the most recent log: LINDA-PC-Sun_11_02_2025_162718_29.zip - Google Drive
and the CBS from this morning before I attempted to get the KB .msu file to run: CBS.log - Google Drive

I am lost and don't know how to proceed. I thank you in advance for continuing to help me.

- - - Updated - - -

OK, I may be on to something.

I have two user profiles on the machine. I decided to boot normal and went into the other user which I never use and the system is stable in the other user in normal boot. I left it sitting over night and the system is still fine in the other user.

Now, how do I troubleshoot this user profile issue?
Maybe now I can get that KB installed.

Hi Torchwood,

I backed up my files manually and then let MS do it also as I deleted my main User Profile.

My system has been stable since I went into the unused User and now the New User Profile I setup.

Of course my Desktop is empty. :-( But truth be told I was getting lazy with my Desktop and had too much stuff on it, and probably why is hosed up.

I'm not sure what other errors may pop up now that I've got Windows Update enabled. I am temped to try and shut it all down again as all the diagnostics I did on the machine came back without file integrity problems.

I found the Rufus 3.18 file.
Looking to see what else I need.

I'm going to play with it a few days and try to get my Desktop back to somewhat normal. I'm calling this solved but will wait a couple of days to make sure it doesn't pop it's head back up.
So the non-blue, no-text BSOD was a corrupted User Profile. Moral: Make sure to have more than one User Profile that you can log into if things go sideways.

Torchwood, I can't thank you enough for being there with me, you gave me the courage to soldier on. I'm getting too old and my brain is getting fuzzy about all this computer stuff. Glad I'm still hanging on to the two Win 7 machines because that's what I'm used to. Contemplating going to Linux on a new machine, but that takes courage and unclogged brain cells.

- - - Updated - - -

Hi Torchwood,

I was in the system fine and ran a chkdsk and it deleted and replaced a lot of invalid security IDs. It completed and rebooted. Now no matter which user I go into it opens in temporary mode and I can open things like event viewer.

I'm assuming at this point that a lot of what's been installed under the User I uninstalled has taken with it a lot of installed software even for Microsoft.

Not sure how to proceed.

- - - Updated - - -

Ok here's where I stand at the moment.

All three Users w/ Administrator boot normal into temporary profiles and I can't run things like event viewer, services, regedit. They aren't recognized.

I have the 'install.wim' file on partition drive E.

I can't find the file(s)/program(s) to make a bootable thumbdrive. Rufus only goes back to Win 8.

What files do I need to make a bootable thumb drive?
Can I boot from a thumb drive with Windows 7 Home Premium?
Do I copy the install.wim file to it? I did DL an ISO file also.

I'm hoping to use the install.wim file and try a repair instead of a whole reinstall of windows.

- - - Updated - - -

Well, I made a bootable USB drive with Windows 7 USB DVD Download Tool and got into the 6 or so option but didn't have any luck with any of them. In fact when I boot normal my C: drive is not accessible.

The last restore point I had didn't have windows on it only system.
I don't know how many sfc /scannow's and chkdsk /f /r I did but only once did the check disk do anything and that is when I think it screwed up security files.

I guess I'm down to having to do a re-install.

How do I get all my drivers on the boot USB drive?

- - - Updated - - -

Hi Torchwood,

I bit the bullet and did a Reinstall off of the bootable USB drive and it appears to have worked. I was up all night to get it done because I tried everything under the sun I could to avoid the reinstall.

I am in the process of checking it out and if all goes well over the next couple of days I'll delete windows.old.

Thanks again for being so willing to help.

- - - Updated - - -

As I go along there is a lot wrong with the install. Certifications for one.
I'm not sure I have the ability to get this re-install working as I only had a vague awareness of certs until today.
I can't get to some websites without opera telling me it can't validate certs.
I can't get malwarebytes installed.
And a couple of other things.

If there's anyone that can walk me through all of the aftermath of this re-install stuff, that would be amazing.

I don't think I have the ability to do this, I may have to get another machine that has Linux. I hear there are a lot less headaches with a Linux system.

Thanks to anyone whose listened.
