Hi, I have a Windows 7 64 bit laptop which is struggling with the update KB2687277 (OneNote 32bit).

It hangs when closing down everytime (all other updates have been applied fine). I have followed some instructions on the MS website all without luck (uninstall the KB2687277 update from Control Panel). I have also tried starting Windows in Safemode to unlock anything, and also to download the update and run it seperately. Nothing works.

Any help greatly appreciated.

OK, have still got the problem.

Have tried SURT - succesfully worked.

SFC Scan - didn't report any problems.

There's no Windows update error code - the update just hangs.

CBS zip attached.

Still getting the lap top hanging everytime the KB2687277 update installs.

Any help really appreciated.

There's no errors in the SFC portion of the log - but there are a lot elsewhere in the CBS.log file.
I suspect that your SoftwareDistribution folder is corrupt.

the problem with that the conventional cure can lead to problems later on, if not handled properly, and you will lose your Update history (but the updates will still be installed, and viewable in the Installed Updates listing).

Open an Elevated Command Prompt
Run the following commands

NET STOP WUAUSERV
REN C:\WINDOWS\SoftwareDistribution SDOLD
NET START WUAUSERV

wait 15 minutes, and reboot
then wait 10 minutes, and open Windows Updates, and run a Check for Updates.

Install only the oldest update found - and reboot once installed
then go back to Windows updates and install the others.

Hi, just tried the above. All went fine...until I did the check for updates.

Only the two updates came up (I did force a recheck too): the KB2687277 and the optional Bing desktop (which I don't want installed). The KB2687277 install hung again...

Any (more) help please?

(I can't blame you for avoiding the Bing install - I do too!)
Please open an Elevated Command Prompt, and run the following command

fsutil resource setautoreset true C:\

close the window and reboot - then test Windows Update again.

Just tried that (thanks again for helping - really appreciate it) but still can only see the two updates (including Bing )?

Any ideas?

Thanks

Please run another SFC /SCANNOW, and post the results - I'll compare with the earlier ones and see if there's any change, or anything new

I can't honestly say that I can see anything wrong in the new data. There are some minor errors, which Windows ignores, and which are present in many fully-functional systems.
I can only think that the problem is confined to the WU system, so a full reset should work.
How do I reset Windows Update components? - use the fixit on the page, rather than the popover.

Hi,just tried to run Fixit. It ran ok.

Tried to do the update....and it's hung again :(.

I've left it a couple of hours and no progress?

Anything else to suggest?

Thanks for the help so far.

I don't know if this is related but I get an "Interactive Services Detection" Message: "...another printer or printer share with this name exists. Please rename this printer or printer share"?
