Among the Patch Tuesday updates of August 2014, IIRC, KB2976897 was one of the problematic security updates. I just did a clean install of Windows 7 x64, and KB2976897 is being offered as an update. In checking MS support MS14-045 there is no notice of withdrawal, or replacement. Can someone confirm that KB2976897 is good to go. I ask out of an abundance of caution.

I don't recall any specific problems with this patch - and as far as I can see it's not been updated since release- although there were reports in the scaremongers, Iif I remember right the problems were ascribed in the end to prior infections.
It shouldn't cause any problems.

Thanks for your reply Noel. A general search found loads of hits regarding the 8-12-14 patches, reporting BSOD. It appears that InfoWorld was the first to report on the BSOD issue as follows: "In this case, two MS14-045/KB 2984615 kernel-mode driver patches, KB2976897 and KB2982791, have been implicated in triggering Blue Screen Stop 0x50 messages." Unfortunately, the information in those search hits didn't define an end result regarding KB2976897. Based on Microsoft's own report, it appears that the culprit was KB2982791, which was pulled, with the "strong" recommendation that it be uninstalled. They subsequently issued a replacement update. Nothing more was said about KB2976897 as far as MS goes, so in the absence of any other info, I'm installing it. Thanks again for your reply. Although I have used Windows Seven Forums for research in the past, this was my first actual post, so it's good to know that it received at least one reply.
