KB3088195 update fails

I've tried numerous times to install the windows 7 update:
KB3088195 (Security update for windows7)
It fails every time with error code: 80073701
I have windows update set to inform me of updates, but not install.
My computer is running win7 home preimum 64 bit

I tried running the windows update readiness tool (about a week ago)
It did not fix the problem.
I tried running the windows update troubleshooter(at least twice)
It tells me: error code 0x80070490 and service registration is missing or corrupt
and then claims all is fixed and repaired. But the intallation still fails.
p.s. Cant post the cbs.log file-its 940 meg!

I had a virus about a month ago, but
I am running kaspersky total security now and it claims I am clean.
Is it incompatible with this update?
Or is there some damage from the virus that kaspersky couldnt repair?
Any ideas?

Hi Elwood. You could try running the standalone installer and see if that works. I've had the occasional update not install through WU but will install from the installer.
