Hello all, I need some help, I am having an issue with 2 workstations.

1 Physical Windows 7 Pro x86
1 Virtual Windows 7 Pro x64

When I try to install the update KB3185330 the workstation reboots and eventually I get the message on the screen "Failure configuring Windows updates. Reverting changes. Do not turn off your computer" error when you try to install Windows updates.

I did run the MS fix it tool and I still get the error.

Any ideas?

Hi Supersales,
Can you follow ThrashZones instructions.
If that fails can you then follow the instructions from this MS kb958040
https://support.microsoft.com/en-us/kb/958040

While futher investigating this i came across another post stating they got round the VM update problem by setting it as Offline.

I don't have System Center Operations Manager (SCOM) Management Console or the file %WinDir%\System32\Spupdsvc.exe on the workstation.

I have tried the update offline as well.

Hi Supersales,

Are they Pro/Ultimate installs

did your comp set a restore point @ 2016-10-24 08:41:55:038
and are they set to the right time.
If the answer to the above is yes.

we have to consider.
A change in GPO settings?, have a look at this thread
Windows Update clients not following WSUS GPO schedule

IF you didnt make any that leaves us with malware, when was the last time you ran your AV, did it find anything.

Av is installed on the machine and scanned everyday.
I also took the machine off our wsus server and same results. I am going to see if I can reset the wsus client on the machine.

Reasons for KB3185330 to fail

I've spent a bunch of time testing and found a solution to my computers with this problem. Here's some from my blog:

[SOLUTION] KB3185330 FAILING! – October 2016 Security Monthly Quality Rollup for Windows 7 – BRIAN MORRIS TECHNOLOGY SERVICES

Some have reported using GRUB or other booting methods others than booting straight to Windows. Try booting directly to Windows. That’s not my problem.
Thanks to an anonymous poster, I figured my problem out. I searched for “Computer Management” in the Start menu (or right-click on Computer, Manage). In here, I have a Recovery partition built by Dell from their OEM image. In the computers that are failing, the Recovery partition has no room left. (In this picture, the RECOVERY partition has 1.96GB of space after I fixed it.

I used Acronis Disk Director to shrink the C drive by 2 GB before the partition and then increased the size of the Recovery partition, rebooted, ran the KB3185330 and it worked!
The reason this has happened to computers I’ve setup is because I use Acronis True Image to image OEM drives — usually to SSDs that are smaller than the original 500GB OEM hard drive. Acronis’s software slices off free space in the Recovery partition when fitting to a smaller drive, hence the lack of space on the Recovery partition.
This may also affect KB3133977 and KB3033929.
