Long time, no login. Thanks for keeping my account active.

For an acquaintance of some time, I've imaged a legally activated Windows 7 SP1 x64 Home system prior to an attempt at the free 10 upgrade which I'll be getting to Sunday.

Initially, in examining the update history, the last successful update was KB4074598, February. Everything else after that is Failed.

I resolved that issue and Windows Update delivered a boatload (including Silverlight, heh), but the only monthly is the current KB4534310. Another update run returned "No important updates available."

Not wanting to spend any more time on this, this is what got imaged.

In all my desktop-side support over the years, I haven't run into an update fail of this magnitude.

• Out of curiosity, does KB4534310 cover all the March to December rollups?

I can't nail down a definitive answer searching teh internet.

Cheers.

No, I can't find a definitive answer either. But I have just got my hands on a used W7 machine that was way behind in its updates. This is what I saw when I tried to bring it fully up to date:

  • The latest service stack updates were required before it could get the more recent roll up updates, without that it reported a failed update.
  • The SHA-2 update will be required KB4474419 SHA-2 Code Signing Support Update for Windows 7 - Aug. 13
  • Even after KB4534310 was installed windows update still offered me the 2019-06 and 2019-08 roll ups. They seemed to install successfully.
  • Some updates that windows update listed as Important reported 'not needed' when installed.
It's fully up to date now and windows update finds no important updates. But it took many iterations of checking for updates to get it to that state.

I also have W7 Pro on my System Two, and several W7 Hyper-V VMs. My other machines run Windows 10/11. Their specs are in my Ten Forums & Eleven Forum profiles.

Thanks for the feedback, Bree.

Yeah, the service stacks are the boogaboo. I spent some time at the MS update history page where "Learn about the security and non-security updates that are published for Windows 7 SP1" learned me nothing.

If the Windows 10 upgrade doesn't go as planned tomorrow, I'll just image it back to what I got done so far and walk away. Its Windows 7 will be better than it was, even if not ideal.

Thank goodness Windows 10 updates are always trouble-free. :geek:

Cheers.
