Update for the new Microsoft Edge for Windows 7 SP1 and Windows 8.1: June 17, 2020

Important
This update is not intended to target Enterprise devices. Specifically, this update targets devices that run Windows 7 SP1 or later versions and Windows 8.1 or later versions that are either Home, Professional, Ultimate, Starter, or Core editions. Devices that run these editions on Active Directory or Azure Active Directory domain are also excluded from this automatic update.

Summary

Microsoft has released a new Chromium-based version of Microsoft Edge. This new version provides best in class compatibility with extensions and websites. Additionally, this new version provides great support for the latest rendering capabilities, modern web applications, and powerful developer tools across all supported OS platforms.

Improvements and fixes

This update includes the following quality improvements:

• The new Microsoft Edge will be pinned to the taskbar and add a shortcut to the desktop. If your current version of Microsoft Edge already has a shortcut, it will be replaced.
• The new Microsoft Edge will not replace Internet Explorer.
• This update will not change your default browser

How to get this update

Windows update

This update will be downloaded and installed automatically from Windows Update.

Prerequisites

For Windows 8.1, there are no prerequisites to apply this update.

For Windows 7 SP1, you must have the following updates installed before you apply this update. If you use Windows Update, these updates will be offered automatically as needed.

• You must have the SHA-2 update (KB4474419) that is dated September 23, 2019 or a later SHA-2 update installed and then restart your device before you apply this update. If you use Windows Update, the latest SHA-2 update will be offered to you automatically. For more information about SHA-2 updates, see 2019 SHA-2 Code Signing Support requirement for Windows and WSUS.
• You must have the servicing stack update (SSU) (KB4490628) that is dated March 12, 2019 or a later SSU update installed. For more information about the latest SSU updates, see ADV990001 | Latest Servicing Stack Updates.

Installation information

To keep your browser secure and up to date, you are asked to accept automatic updates. By clicking Accept and get started you enable Microsoft Edge to update automatically so that you can always have the latest improvements. These updates are independent of your Windows update settings.

Windows 7 support ended on January 14, 2020. Although Microsoft Edge helps keep your device helps secure on the web, your device may still be vulnerable to security risks. We recommend that you move to a supported operating system.

Restart information

You must restart your device after you apply this update.

Removal information

This update can be removed. If you choose to remove the new Microsoft Edge, see How to properly uninstall programs.

I've downloaded a KB4567409x64 and it has installed on "C:\Program Files (x86)\Microsoft\Edge\Application\msedge.exe"

It seems to be a x64 but why it is installed under Program Files (x86)?

Has anyone else been having problems with edge crashing windows explorer to point of not being able to use mouse and cpu increases in explorer? Only way to get out of it is to restart explorer which is no easy task without keyboard and mouse.
