Hi,

This is a carry-over from Sysnative Forums that Torchwood asked me to do.

Here's the result of the Mgadiag too (attached).

Hi Jahere,

There is a slight problem with this, allthough your system reports as Activated, it also requires it to be registered, yours is missing the Event Time Stamp.
Standard fix is to (RE) install KB971033.
you only have 1 rearm remaining, can you read the COA sticker Key (battery compartment).

any reason why you have removed it before, (twice)

Very interesting -- and strange -- find. You might just have hit on the cause of the problem.

Why would I think of registering my OS? I bought the laptop from a dealer back in 2007 -- wouldn't it already have been registered? Or is it something I should do myself? I can't recall receiving any instructions to do so.

I wouldn't have knowingly removed something as important as that. I can't even think of a reason to do it. Why would people do it?

Maybe it was some automated cleanup software that did it? I have used Wintools Pro and Ultimate over the years.

Tried to install Win10 when it first came out -- it certainly did NOT revert the system to the same state as before install. Some things stopped working, had messages of missing dlls. Maybe this is irrelevant.

Since SP1 wouldn't install already for quite a few years, in the past I have used Microsoft's automated Fixit-type software.

I also used to use Perfect Disk, but surely that wouldn't do it.

Anyway, I can still see the 25-digit license key on the COA sticker. What should I do?

Hi Jahere,

You get 3 rearms, I knew something was odd when i saw the FRST report you posted, it showed that the task performed quarterly by the KB had been removed.

SP1 was rolled out in 2010, so your comp been trying to update since then!!
comp was shipped with W7 late Oct 2009.

The W10 upgrade failed because SP1 is not installed.

Change your windows updates option to NEVER
please re-install KB971033
REBOOT TWICE

next Check for updates is SP1 offered, if so go for it
and IGNORE the following

if not please rerun the Mgadiag
and some answers

Ever been hit by malware/Virus they do weird stuff to systems. before 2011:huh:
When did you install Office and is it a different language, use it much
is kb2483139 installed.

I'll do this in a couple of days as work week is starting again and it's back to the grindstone.

>Change your windows updates option to NEVER

OK. So after/if SP1 is successful I'll try to upgrade to W10, then switch upgrades back on.

>Ever been hit by malware/Virus they do weird stuff to systems

Not knowingly. Have been meticulous about using AV from first day: Kaspersky until 2015 or so, then Bitdefender since then.

>When did you install Office

Jeez. That would have been as soon as I got the comp. I haven't updated Office because it's too expensive and I don't need fancy features.

>is it a different language

No, I got the English version, but I do have a Japanese Language Pack installed too. SWM over at Sysnative mentioned that language packs have caused problems in the past. Can you shed any light on this?

(Actually we've spent 5 months rebuilding the manifests etc. to do with language packs. It seemed to be finished, then when I uninstalled Bitdefender it broke again, seemingly wiped out what we'd done. I've got a gut feeling that Bitdefender is not innocent in this. They try to lock everything down to prevent ransomware and I wonder if there're some loose ends in their code. Just speculating. Could be completely wrong.)

For a while back in 2010-2011 I did use something called AnyDVD to bypass region locking on my DVDs. I have a collection of obscure collectors' item DVDs from all over the world that I wanted to back up. I don't know if that software is/was dodgy. Again, my doubts could be completely misplaced.

Hi Jahere,

It will take more than just SP1 to update to W10.
IF THATS WHAT YOU WANT TO DO - YES OR NO
As of 2 months ago the free upgrade was still UNofficially available
IF YES
The way you will have to go would be via a clean install - You will have to EXTERNALLY back-up ALL your personnal files/folders, and have to reinstall Office - product key required
(Download and run Belarc- to find it beforehand)

I asked if you had KB2483139 (language pack updates) installed this could be another problem
you have a Home Premium version of W7 - MS does NOT allow this, Ultimate and Enterprise only
Force install using a 3rd party program, like Vistaltor, breaks activation.

Highly unlikely your obscure DVD collection causes this.

Sysnative and I come at problems a different way they just try to fix-em using thier standard tools
Dont get me wrong they do a good job - i look at the background reason, which i believe is the cause in your case, and all the fixes SWM and YOU made to the manifests wont make a blind bit of difference, especially if you used Vistalator
(It had to change Registry enties to bypass the product rules - a Hack)

Roy
@Snick, if im correct see last paragraph, and why i wont apply for WU training

I didn't force install it. I installed the Japanese lp in a straight-forward way. There was definitely no hints that something was wrong. I'll check to see exactly what I've got re language packs. This could explain the broken activation. i.e. *if* true, then Microsoft would have deliberately broken my OS without giving a reason.

Highly unlikely your obscure DVD collection causes this.

The software I mentioned (that gets around region locking) seemed dodgy so I uninstalled it.

I hope that you all know what you're doing stringing the OP along like this after he/she still has an active 250+ post thread elsewhere.

Disgraceful.

I appreciate the effort in trying to solve the problem. Solving the problem, and letting the lessons be known generally so it might help others, is the most important thing. Also, my "tutor" in the other forum has made an immense effort trying to help me, and I will remember this.

He didnt know it was me that requested the Mgadig.
Even tho SWM initially posted the wrong link, the resultant problem was still identified.
Aint never gonna update until KB971033 is RE-installed
