For reference, 2012 Samsung R laptop, brand new Toshiba exact replacement 500G SATA, and fresh 7 Home Prem installed from 7 Upgrade DVD. Everything fine until a series of automatic updates.

No 3rd party AV or FW installed, and I disabled those as well. I set 'Update' to 'Download but let me decide'.....

In addition to the title above there are 14 'Optional' updates in que, but no 'Important' classed ones (nor SP1).

4+ hours scouring searches, ran several (MS only) diagnostics and fixes, and did the msconfig-Hide All Microsoft Services-Disable All procedure.

As Update is not automatically picking up SP1 for installation, I downloaded to Documents what showed as all (10) 'Downloads' from MS site associated with the service pack ((6)-Window Installer Packages, (3)-Applications, (1)-2Gb Disk Image File). My approach is to attempt manual installation, so which of the files to 'Run' first, and then hopefully the rest know to chime in automatically?

Coincidentally I found this exact same approach and identical question has been asked, but did not appear solved and don't want to hyjack another's thread.

Open to other 'first steps' if this is ill-advised, but need to accomplish getting SP1 installed knowing how critical it is.

Been dealing with computers since '88 and my first XT w/ the HUGE optional 10Mb hard drive. I STILL know next to nothing about them.
I spent several additional hours combing searches and doing (MS brand only) fixes, and eventually got SP1 to install. What appeared to be the trick was cancelling and 'unlisting' all other Important and Optional updates as much as possible and then doing a manual "Check for updates' from Start --> All Programs.

What may have been the initial fault generator might have been my starting to use the laptop yesterday morning and unaware it was doing its automatic update thing after installing the new hard drive and clean installing 7. That may have corrupted a security update and impacted everything else. I also turned off the MS AV and MW which may or may not have had affect.

I ceased any action while it installed that first SP1, and ever since it's been a cyclic routine of successive manual 'Check for updates' and installing most all, and at least 10 'Restart Now':
Initially 179 Important and 4 Optional, then 4 I and 1 O, 8 I and 2 O, 2 I and 0 O, and currently 13 I and 6 O.

Will this never end? Haha There have been numerous Important updates that failed one or more times before success. I imagine it's just catching up for the past several years. After it's finally all done updating things I'll have to undo the msconfig instruction and turn Defender and Essentials back on.
