KB980182 - SIDEBAR NO LONGER FUNCTIONING - WIN 7 x64

My computer installed the above mentioned update last night and ever since, the gadgets in my sidebar have become "corrupted" - the images in the gadgets no longer display correctly (white square with red cross). I have tried everything possible including a system restore, un-installing the update, and re-registering the various DLLS linked to the sidebar but no luck. I would really appreciate it if someone could help.

Hi again - I think I may have found the cause of the problem, the KB patch somehow prevents PNG files from displaying properly, unfortunately I don't know how to fix it.
