keep computer off or on

Well I would like to know what is best for my computer. Leaving it on or off when I'm not using it?
I am confused some say to keep on while others say to keep it off while not using it.
What are the positives of keeping it on?
What are the negatives of keeping it on?

There is nothing wrong with keeping it on expect for a unexpected power surge, so if you do decide to keep it on make sure you protected. But turning it off, you have less worry and save some money by not wasting energy or power etc. Really it is up to you what you do.

I i learned in college on Tuesday just gone the question you ask is processor dependant.
As i was taught and im sure someone will argue otherwise
Intel processors are designed to be turned off while not in use where as AMD processors are designed to be left one permanently..... yes turned on, not sleep or even hibernate but simply left on full power (desktop mode)
Though saying the above and the fact that if you turn off while using an AMD it will have detrimental effects to your processor, in personal experience over there years, turning off and AMD processor seems to have no or very little effect on its health and lifetime
though i have never looked for any official information on weather the above is true, it would be nice to see AMD's official statement and opinion on the matter.

I don't think there is any right or wrong answer. Everybody has their own preference. Personally, I shut my computer down every evening. I have been doing that since I bought my first PC back in 1998 and have never had any problems.

That is completely bogus. Whoever told you that is wrong and in the future you should not listen to them as they have No idea what they are talking about.

The advice given to ripbox is completely false.

The long and short of the matter is...it all depends on you and your usage. If I turn on a computer, especially a tower, I will leave it on all day, in case I use it later. When I'm surely done with it, I shut it down. There's no reason for me to have my computer running overnight. Now I do have a home server that runs all the time, but that serves a different purpose.

Turn all electronic devices off when fully done with them. Of course whole home or business servers and rigs are a different beast but even they like to be turned off and re-booted from time to time. How many times have you called on your phone, cable box, wireless router, computer....etc. I'm regularly asked when was the last time you re-booted or turn off and wait 30 seconds and turn back on. Plus with a above average computer system it will draw current and generate heat while waiting for your input........so why if your done. Lastly by adding a SSD which has become almost common place your shutdown and boot times have been greatly reduced. Shut them down when done.

It also somewhat depends on the environment and the computer itself.

I have an iMac which will shut down due to overheating on warm days. But my custom computer in a slightly cooler room can run 24/7 while maintaining a decent temperature, shutting down only to install updates.

It's really up to you and how you perceive the components you have settle in your tower and how they could handle idle. Man has to know its machine also and what he can do with it.

My personal, is when i'm leaving home for four to six hours i put sleep mode, if i go slept late either and knowing i'm gonna browse again in the morning.

But more than 8 to twelve hours i do turn off all devices, by pure consciousness.

I leave mine on and I turn it off. All depends on how I feel at the moment.

Flip a coin. It doesn't really matter.
