Keep Linux or back to XP?

Funny, none of my Ubuntu, Red Hat, or Suse installs have suffered from this problem and I connect to the internet all the time. I have 3 Linux work stations and this has not been a problem for me. The only times I have had to re-install was due to my own efforts, you know......"your gun, your bullet, your foot".

Connecting to the internet itself is not the problem.

Updating it is the problem...

I think that most people simply turn that off. Expecially when it wants to update most every single day on default settings for most distros :)

One thing I always wonder is why every Linux thread I've made contains posts completely unrelated to the topic at hand... maybe a Linux Discussion thread would be in order.

Because just like Linux itself - there are a lot of varying sources... ;)

There already has been Linux only threads - they too have gone gone on wild rides :D

The simple answer is that we all like to go off topic - to steer it back onto your topic you have to go "oi - OP here, remember my question?" :p

Ubuntu checks every 10 days for updates, but you can set them up to auto-install just like windows if that is your wish. It is no different from your virus db updating every day however.

Well, I just noticed a problem with my laptop, with Dreamlinux installed. [snip] ...

Dump Linux and run Win7.

Sorry - you came to a Windows forum asking about Linux!
