Keeping Icons out of the Start Menu

Is there a way to stop used program's icons to pop up in the start menu? I have icons that I have pinned to the start menu but whenever you use a program that is not listed its icon is placed there and i have to remove it manually. How do I prevent this? Thanks

If you right click on the start button and select properties, there is a check box for "Store and display recently opened programs."

Maybe try unchecking that.
