Hey guys, I have a dell inspiron 1545, windows 7 64 bit, 18 months old, it recently crashed. I was playing music on Grooveshark when it started clicking loudly, it then went to a blue screen which said something about a kernel but it disappeared so fast I couldn't read it properly. Then it tried to reboot but it froze so I turned it of manually with the power button left it for a few minutes and turned on. It has been running normally ever since apart from a faint internal clicking that I had not noticed prior to the blue screen. Please help and if you could keep it simple that would be good because I'm not that computer savvy, thanks :)

""I'm not that computer savvy""

Ok,no problem :) in simple words...

Clicking sound it may be a dying hard disk.
Thats why i advice to backup everything important first then run these tests.

Backup
is: to safe\copy\paste in a safe place like usb external drive everything important, because if the hard disk die you may lose everything.

The first http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/818-disk-cleanup-open-use.html
is just cleaning the hard disk from (not necessary files) and free some space, dont alert it will not delete anything from your personal files.

The second http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html is to check the hard disk for (problems) and try to "repair it" if possible.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The above are just the first steps.

(Turn off completely the sound speakers (mute) and post if you still hear the clicking sound.

Clean the cpu cooler fan with air spray and post if you still hear the clicking sound.

Did you had any errors during the scan?

Read carefully this http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/96938-check-disk-chkdsk-read-event-viewer-log.html

Copy (view the screenshot) and paste the scan results in word and upload it here.

still faint clicking/chirping sounds when muted, I don't have any air spray so can't try that at the moment, no errors came up as far as i know, when i try to follow the check disk steps I get to step 4 but then after right clicking applications the find button is grey and doesn't have an effect.

No,is not this, this is an old error report 02/12/2010

We want the check disk report.

Find and upload the new one 25/08/2011 or
26/08/2011

Read all this very carefully! http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/96938-check-disk-chkdsk-read-event-viewer-log.html

If you followed these steps http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/433-disk-check.html then you must have a new Wininit
25/08/2011 or 26/08/2011 in Event Viewer.
-----------------
The steps are,

Start and finish the Disk-Check

(Select\Check also the Scan for and attempt recovery of bad sectors box) then run the
Disk-Check
When you done with the Disk-Check,

Run the Event-Viewer and there find the most recent Wininit and upload it here.

about 2 or 3 weeks ago loud clicking again and locked up so I shut it down with the power button, been fine since that. I ran a virus scan about a week ago it found a few things and removed them don't know if that's relevant.

Sometimes yes this is relevant.

Though clicking sound usually is dying hard disk.

Is good idea to run also these 2 scans,

Download,instal,update SUPERAntiSpyware

Download,instal,update Malwarebytes

Restart in safe mode,
Full scan with superantispyware, finish. Full scan with malwarebytes, finish.

Restart,
run again the same both scans in normal mode.

still there v. faint but as I say I don't know if that has always been there and I haven't noticed because it's not really something I'd think or worry about, I did think that it could just be the "arm" of the hard drive moving across the disk as it's accessing info, But if it is the hard drive dying there's not a lot I can do is there? :)

As always,backup everything important.
If have,use your warranty.
If the hard disk completely die, then check if your laptop can handle a solid state drive and plug one in.
With the solid state drive your laptop it will be faster and you will have less consume in battery. :)
