KEY , help...?

Ok,

So I bought a new computer and I have my windows upgrade cd.

I did a clean install with the upgrade cd, and when it prompted for the key, I put in the key from the upgrade.

Several days have gone by.

It just promted me again, and the upgrade key does not work. I tried to enter the key on the side of the computer ( I knew it was a long shot) and sure enough, ... no dice.

Am I screwed? I am a college student and really need this computer to work. I bought the upgrade cd, and the computer, I have two legit keys that should match.


.....The computer did not come with a restore cd....

When you say clean install, did this computer have any other copy of Windows or some other operating system installed on it? If not, then it thinks you tried to do a clean install with an upgrade key, which Microsoft doesn't like. The way around that is to use this same CD to do another clean install of Windows 7 and start it from within Windows 7 and then your key should be accepted.

You would need to be using the same version which came with the computer to get the Product Key on the side of the computer to work.

If you need to unlock all versions in your Upgrade DVD to install that version because you want to use the computer's own Product Key (saving the retail Upgrade key for another install) then extract the ISO using ImgBurn, run this: Ei.cfg Removal Utility Lets You Use Any Product Key With Your Windows 7 Disc then burn an all-versions DVD, install your licensed version that came with computer.

If instead you want to activate the Product Key which came with the retail Upgrade DVD you used to install, then you don't need to clean reinstall as suggested, but instead run an Upgrade install from the new desktop and it will finally accept key.

Almost all new Window PCs come with a restore system disk in bedded within the HDD. Usually there is an application designed to allow the new user to make a back DVD of the in bedded system. Just about all manufactures do this to save on the expense of the computer (no media or manuals).

If you chose to install a clean copy from an upgrade disc then chances are you may have erased the application needed to make the DVD needed to restore your system. You might try contacting the PC manufacture to see if you can get a system disc and an OEM copy of the OS.
