What .... ?? Now what do I do?? This is ridiculous and I don't understand. I paid for the darn copy and now I can't activate it becuz I had to do a clean install??!

This is an easy fix. Just go ahead and start Windows 7 set up from Windows 7 desktop and allow Windows 7 to upgrade itself.
So basically you install 7, then once you get to the desktop run setup and then upgrade the existing Windows 7 with Windows 7.
Then you will be able to activate.
