Both of the keyboards i use (gateway sk-9920 and Happy Hacking Lite 2) the ` needs to be held down for about .5 seconds in order for it to register. the keyboards work on my Linux machine but i haven't tried them with any other windows machine yet.

Anyone else having this issue or know of a fix?

I googled '` key issue problem bug' but only 'key issue problem bug' were searched for. :/

Acute ( ´ ) and grave ( ` ) are diacritical marks, often called accents. (Diacritic - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia)

They are not supposed to appear alone, which is why normal keyboard layouts wait another character to be pressed before producing said character (most often a vocal) together with acute or grave. Pressing acute or grave should also produce nothing, print nothing to screen before another character is typed.

An example: pressing letter e produces letter e. Pressing first acute ( ´ ) produces nothing, shows nothing on screen. But pressing thereafter letter e produces é. To get à, you have to press grave ( ` ) and thereafter a.

yes, BWK, that key... no, not in-game resources (maybe if/when i play Fallout 3) but other than that i use it as a command pre-fix for a bot in IRC (chat).

Kari, i'm using the United States English layout. ` + any other key doesn't produce anything special for me.

BigBrother, I tested it just now with both US (English) and US (International) keyboard layouts in my English Seven Ultimate. It works as it should work, at least here. Tested with both laptop's own keyboard and external keyboard.

We are talking about this key (grave & tilde):

Grave_and_Tilde.png

Pressing `, releasing it and pressing E results È. Pressing `again and pressing a results à.

it does nothing of that sort for me... and i'm not sure when... (probably when i opted for the language bar to be available) but "`" has always been a normal key that produced ` (or ~ when holding shift).

I just tried this on my work comp in XP and ` does not show up on its own with the language setting set to English>Keyboard>United States-International

it shows up in this text window though.... `i <in text window ì < outside of text window

If you set up your keyboard for English>Keyboard>US it should work correctly

Edit: props to Kari for thinking of the Language settings.

Interesting. It really shouldn't work like that. Acute, grave and tilde (~) are included in all western kb-layouts, even they are rarely used or needed. I can imagine an American might go through his whole life without needing them, although some words of Spanish origin with tilde are quite widely used in modern American English: jalapeño, piña colada, piñata, El Niño etc.

I'm only using one of them (acute) when corresponding with a friend of mine, Renée from Utrecht Holland. ;)

I'm sorry I can not help you, I really don't understand why your keyboard is not working as it should.

Kari

ok, this is interesting... when i hit the american equivalent of an apostrophe, what Kari is describing happens. it seems my tilde(`) button is just slow. >:(

i think i'm going to disable switching languages to see if that helps.

***EDIT: wow, now this is just discrimination... NOW that i disabled changing languages/keyboard layouts does ` (+shift) + o/a = ò à (Ã Õ)

alrighty... i found the issue (to an extent):

to switch through the languages (while using the language bar), the grave accent was used (i disabled it in the hotkeys settings for the language bar). though, however, i have not found a way to disable ` + a/o to make àò in mIRC. ` works just fine in Firefox though. >_<

There's a workaround that includes some extra effort, if you want to use that sign (`) in mIrc: tapping the key two times produces ``, two times the grave (first one does nothing, waiting second keystroke and when second character is not a letter as it expected, you'll see two graves printed on the screen). Then backspace to eliminate the second one.

Same with acute and tilde, tapping (´) two times gives ´´ and tapping (~) two times gives ~~.

Confusing and complicated ;)
