Ancient HP DV5000 (win 7 Ultimate) resurrected for a project.
OK But keyboard really weird
Some keys dont work but worse, some keys generate 2 characters
So, for example
a produces aq
b and c are fine
d produces de and
e produces de
f produces fr
F produces FR
and so on

Device Manager says I have 2 keyboards
1. HID Keyboard Device - I think this is an HP thing to do woth function keys. Anyway Ive unistalled this but that makes no difference
2. Std 101/102-Key or MS natural PS/2 keyboard: Ive treied updating the keyboard driver but It says I have the latest
Ive checked Control Panel Keyboards and delay is medium. Changing it does not help
Region and Language says I have English UK keyboard

So any suggestions as to where I go net?

The keyboard itself has no characters. The keyboard signal is converted to a character by the OS.
There are some app to remap the keyboard keys. That is what has been done on the computer.
Look for an app on the start menu for remapping keys.

I am familiar with the concept. The PC in question has no key mapping software so its hard to see how that could be the cause
But, just in case, I downloaded KeyMapper
That just tells me the keys are mapped correctly A ->A.; D->D; E->E
And anyway it does not allow me to map one key to 2 characters
In fact I didn't think the registry allowed one key pressed to generate two characters of output

So I dont see how that can be the cause.
Any other suggestions?

It can be the keyboard. Try another one.

That keyboard pattern is very interesting indeed since it relates to the top key from the one being pressed.

There's a couple ways to help tackle this. I'll list some.

1) Start typing devices into search under the Windows start orb and click on Devices and Printers. See another keyboard or some odd thing in there?

2) HID applies to a Human Input Device or USB. PS/2 is the old pin connector you might be familiar with back in the day. Kinda silly, but just look behind your computer for something rouge. If your monitor has USB look there too.

3) Open Task Manager and look for some oddity processes. If you find any what are they?

4) Run Autoruns. This can help find things that you don't know about. But be extra cautious deleting or unticking anything. If unsure ask.

5) Do you see the same behavior in safe mode?

6) Sometimes third-party software like the popular Logitech keyboard software (forget its name) can be a culprit. I never use that software with my wireless keyboard. Just let Windows pick up on it and install the generic driver. Unless you use a wireless keyboard in an insecure area and need encrypted keystrokes, the software in my opinion is worthless and creates more bloat and possibility of an issue for a simple task of operating a keyboard. Plus, those so-called encrypted keystrokes are probably using simple XOR encryption. Those "extra keys" for email launching and whatnot? Those are key commands already programed into Windows. So no need for a third-party software for those to function. There are already plenty of great macro key programs if that's one's need.

Yes I thought it interesting. Too systematic and consistent to be a bad keyboard.
Anyway some answers
1) there are two keyboards the other HID Keyboard device which I think deals with the special HP keys on the laptop (it has a built in DVD player). Nothing else unusual that I could see
2) Nothing odd. Both HID devices (one in Keyaboards and one in HIDevies) have location = HP Quick Lanuch Button
3) Nothing under apps;Under processes most have descriptions; nothing that looks weird.
4) Auturuns. Lot of tech stuff I dont understand but nothing sticks out
5) Does the same thing in safe mode
In the BIOS set up utility the a key generates only 1 character (entering a password)
And then I must have screwed something ip because it now refuses to boot.
I'll (try to ) fix that tomorrow

I am beginning to think it was the death throes!!

Laptop now will not boot.

Screen does not turn on
No sign of life from the disc drive or its light

Only activity when turning on the a rattle of the DVD drive

Wont boot from Windows DVD
Oh well
Thanks for your help

That other keyboard with the built-in DVD drive could have been the fault vector. There could have been a short or something.

I did a quick look at the HP DV5000 and don't see this type of keyboard.

Is this what you're referring to? https://www.ixbt.com/portopc/hp/dv5000/DU-pult.jpg

Primary keyboard might be bad. That's a simple fix actually. Replacements are probably on eBay.

Motherboard could be toast as well now. I'd really have to look at it myself. Motherboards can be had on eBay as well. LOL

That is the keyboard but I never actually got one when I bought the laptop (2nd hand)
The driver gets loaded automatically but even when I disable the driver the problem occurred.

Primary keyboard may be bad but that seems unlikely to be a cause of the screen not turning on (or being visible on an external monitor) when the laptop is booted.

As to fixing it . . .
Keyboard - no problem
Motherboard - always a challenge getting the right one. I think mine is 461068-001
So together maybe £50 and then it may not work!

And even if it does the procesor si to slow to decompress H265 video so I think I'm better scrounging ebay for a working cheap one

Thanks for your help
