keyboard keeps stopping untill i click on where i was typing

hi everyone,
my first post
my keyboard types for a while, then i get a ding sound and it will not type again untill i click with the mouse on where the last bit of type is, then its fine for a few seconds and it does it all over again

plus when i am scrolling down a page with the mouse and stop scrolling for a few seconds, the mouse will not scroll again untill i click on the left mouse button
I am running windows ultimate x64 both the mouse and the keyboard are wired and connected to usb 3 ports

any help will be appreciated as its really doing my head in

It sounds as though something is interrupting it.. When this happens does the bar at the very top of your screen (where the close, minimize and maximize buttons are) fade to a paler colour?
