Keyboard/mouse works on boot but not login

Hey guys! trying to recover from a system crash here.. One of the issues was me not being able to install/uninstall microsoft antivirus, since it seems some files were deleted which it needed. I tracked that issue to yet another issue what windows installer could not start, which suggested me to check if it was enables in Msservice.exe, which I couldn't start either.

After some googling, I found a fix on MS website, which moved some dll around and asked me to reboot PC. After doing so, it stopped recognizing my keyboard and mouse (both usb) at the login screen, they are completely dead even thou they work on boot and in bios (and are detected in bios).

I tried to restoring to the point before the "fix", but same issue. Any ideas what I can do? I have recovery CD, but repair ain't helping, nor does safe mode. Windows 7, 64 bit.

Have you checked your system for any Virus's and Malware...these are known to do what your experiencing. Have you run a registry cleaner to clean and remove any left over strings that aren't needed or used, which can cause some problems with the un-install/install of software.

Hard to say what DLL or file got moved from here. Any chance the computer also has a PS2 mouse or keyboard port and do you have either to test on the PC? Have you tried logging in via Safe Mode? Power on the PC and keep tapping the F8 key then select Safe mode with Networking. If you have another computer in the house connected to your network, you could try using Remote Desktop from a working PC to the problem one. Once logged in you could try and repair the broken PC. RDP would have to have been enabled on the problem PC for that to work.

I have tried safe mode, yes. I guess I will try and get hold of a PS2 keyboard and see f I can get it in that way. Otherwise I am locked out and cant clean registry or do anything else :/

But let's say I do get into the system, what can I do to get usb working again, except for malmware check? As I mentioned before, I just recovered it from crash, so many stuff are not working or missing dlls, such as installer, msservice, list goes on. How can I repair them?

You many end up having to do a complete clean install of the OS if your having that many issues. One more thing to try before the clean install. Reboot computer, then start tapping the F8 key to get into the F8 menu, from there you can choose last known good configuration and a few other options as well.

I've managed to get into the system past login with ps2 keyboard (still have to get hold of ps2 mouse thou, adapter doesnt work), all the usb ports were having the yellow erro mark next to them with message of windows not recognizing digital signature.. I have tried shutting power down and unplugging all usb devices with no result.

Gonna try your suggestion, Bassfisher, but it looks like Im heading towards clean install

Thanks for the tip about f8 menu! It allowed me to disable driver signature enforcement and boot with usb ports active. Can now back up most important stuff and do a clean install, since everything seems to be pretty broken.

Cronnix, go into Device Manager, scroll down to Universal Serial Bus Controller and click your + key then highlight USB Root Hub & USB Composite Device. Right click on each of them (use the key between ALT and CTRL on your keyboard) then select Uninstall. Reboot the computer and Windows will automatically reinstall the USB drivers you just removed. Stay away from Registry cleaners they will do more harm than good.

There is a way to resolve the issue that should work for you, although it is somewhat risky. If you perform a hard shutdown, and run in safe mode, and then while it s loading the drivers and registry files perform a hard shutdown again it will allow you to select an option to run based on the last successful configuration. Your mouse and keyboard should work now. The problem is with your USB drivers, but to this day I have still not been able to find a permanent fix for the driver issue...
