Numlock turns off when w7 gets to user login screen. I have to hit the numlock key to turn it back on before login. HK CurrentUser CP Keyboard InitialBoad Registry value is set to 2.

Same issue with a different keyboard. This issue appeared after I reinstalled windows 7. Everything else seems to be normal.

Is there any way to keep numlock on?
Thanks.

hi ayuppie, welcome to the forums
I take that you have numlock on at startup in your BIOS, right?

In your BIOS you should be able to set the "num lock" key to stay on. Go into BIOS and find the setting and change it.

Most boards will require you to press "delete" or F1 or some such key to get into BIOS. It should tell you at post what to press. Go into the BIOS and look for Advanced settings. If you cannot find it, you may have to look up your board and see if these's an "unlock" key to unlock hidden settings, but most boards will have the num lock setting right there on one of the pages.

Nate. You were probably posting while I was replying to the previous question. Bios is set to Numlock on and numlock comes on during post, but turns off at the user logon screen.

I just tried somethin that made a difference. I removed my user password and rebooted and numlock remained on. ???? Why does it turn off when there is a password involved???

If it's on in the BIOS, try this.

Turn Numlock on after you've logged in. It should remember this setting when you next shut down. If that doesn't work, try this:

To set Numlock to On or Off before login:

Run regedit "elevated" and navigate to

Run Registry Editor.
Move to HKEY_USERS\.Default\Control Panel\Keyboard.
Change the value for InitialKeyboardIndicators to 2.

Maybe that will do it.

There is another registry key that you could try

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard
InitialKeyboardIndicators = 2

Configuring the Script

To configure a script to change the NUM LOCK state
1,Start Notepad.
2,Copy the following code, and then paste the code into the text file:

set WshShell = CreateObject("WScript.Shell")
WshShell.SendKeys "{NUMLOCK}"

Save the file as "numlock.vbs" (including the quotes). This properly creates the file with the .vbs extension.
Copy it to the starup folder

This used to work in XP not sure whether it works 100% with Win 7

Hope that helps

Nate. Thanks. Your post was clear, I just didn't see it. Guess I just skipped to Pman's post. Anyway, you both had the solution and I very much appreciate your help. ayuppie

Num lock turns off randomly

I have a problem with my num lock. It is on at startup & logon since I have set the bios for it to be on. However, randomly during the day it turns off. I need it to be on all the time.

My Computer

OS
Windows 7
This did not work for me. I set
HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control Panel\Keyboard
InitialKeyboardIndicators = 2

and still the num lock is off when I log off. I set current user the same way and can't get the num lock to stay on.
