Keyboard only typing numbers in sequence, num lock OFF

This is killing me.
When in word documents or typing in browsers, my laptop keyboard is perfectly fine, but when I'm in a game or certain other programs (like typing in Pandora, the internet radio) my keyboard (all the numbers, letters, and punctuation keys), when hit, will display numbers. No matter what key is pressed the first press gives me a "1," the next a "2," and so forth until "0" which is when it goes back to "1." I can't play anything and have to copy paste into Pandora's typing field. Oddly, when I hit CTRL-V to paste it still registers. CTRL-random number would not paste, so something is (I think) changing my letters into numbers after the letter registers.
I tried to do all the Num-lock and scroll-lock stuff but it didn't work.
AVG Free's scheduled scan turned up nothing.
I'm currently scanning with Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and Spybot S&D. Unhackme says there is no Trojan on my computer.
I temporarily fixed the problem previously with a system restore, but it did not last.
Someone please help!

I searched and found a guy with a similar problem, but there was no solution...

What happens if you use a different keyboard? Assuming it is not a laptop.

I plan to try that tomorrow, if I can dig up a cheap plug-in keyboard from somewhere; it's 11 over here.
Thanks for replying and trying to help!
EDIT: it's a laptop, by the way. Does that complicate matters?

Unfortunately the num and scroll locks were not the problem...
Thanks though! And thanks for the welcome :D.

Can't find another keyboard, will keep trying.

I have the exact same problem... tell me, does your keyboard work normally if you hold down one of the alt keys?

Somehow on mine holding alt seems to fix my but only while holding down the alt key, and trying to do that while killing things is rather... annoying...

A solution to this problem would be greatly appreciated... because it's driving me insane... well... more insane <.<

More information is required... Like, when you say it types it in sequence...

When you do:

IIIII

Does it go:

12345?

Or if you do:

ertyertyertyerty

Does it do:

1234123412341234

The reason I ask this is more of trying to determine the problem, and of course, doing what someone else suggested, try a different keyboard.

I'm assuming you have the same problem as I do, so to respond to the previous poster no matter what i type it comes up in the sequence 1234567890.

Example

I type - ABCDEFGHIJK

My display shows 12345678901

I type - AAAAAAAAAAA

my display shows 12345678901

I type - ABCABCABCABC

my display shows 123456789012

there seems to be absolutly no patterns to it, but if i press any number or letter or symbol key it just types from 1-0 in sequence over and over again.

Is it with one application or with everything?

If it is just one application, name it.

If it is everything, I suggest you download Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware on another computer, then try running it on your laptop and see what it says. It seems to mean that there might be some weird malware on your system.

its with a variety of applications, generally games but i also have the issue with yahoo messenger and a few other things that i can't remember off hand. As far as I can tell it isn't any form of virus, i've run all kinds of scans from a variety of publishers and gotten nothing. It seems like the keyboard is just setting itself to some really strange setup.

Also for me a lot of times the first command i enter when i open one of these programs usually works. So if i start a game and press W to move forward I move forward, but then every command after works. Its easier to see in yahoo messenger because i'm actually typing. When i first open the program the first letter I type in works, but then after that the number sequence starts with anything else I press.

Suggests to me you have some weird background program running if it sort of works fine in games but wigs out on IM and other applications. Run Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and try also posting a HijackThis Log.

Boot into safe mode or diagnostic boot to see if this is software/hardware.

To boot into safe mode hit F8 repeatedly at startup until you can pick.
For diagnostic, hit start and type msconfig, then select diagnostic startup.

Okay I booted to both safe mode and diagnostic mode and...

diagnostic mode - no change, opened yahoo messenger as its the easiest way to test it and had the same issue, first letter works fine but then the sequence starts up. Opened and closed the program several times with the same results, rebooted the computer into diagnostic again, same results.

safe mode - worked perfectly, opened yahoo messenger and much to my surprise typing in my username actually worked. Once again opened and closed the program several times/rebooted, same results.

I will run the tools the other poster recommended shortly, just didn't have a chance yet.

I dunno, just tossing an idea out. It sounds like a (malicious?) keylogger program gone wrong.

One would think an anti-malware scan would detect such, however.

Yeah, definitely a bad program or what not. Run some antivirus to check that, update drivers, etc.

Have you tried a different keyboard?

~Lordbob

Yes, I have tried two different keyboards, both of which do the same thing...

It doesn't matter what I type it always repeats 1-0, if I hold shift it does the symbols for the numbers...

Is it with one application or with everything?

If it is just one application, name it.

If it is everything, I suggest you download Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware on another computer, then try running it on your laptop and see what it says. It seems to mean that there might be some weird malware on your system.

Well, it started in Firefox, mostly on flash files, then it started in my Yahoo Messenger, and my MSN... those two messenger ones have stopped and even when it did do it, all I had to do was click out of the window then click back in to fix it... I do remember once logging in and everything was doing it, Notepad, Microsoft Word, Google Chrome, you name it, where I restarted to have it load up saying it couldn't find the source files (Scared the crap out of me) restarting it again to have it back to normal... then after that Dead Space, Call of Duty: World at War, and even my PS2, SNES, NDS, and GBA emulators would start doing it making my games unplayable... then the flash on my Google Chrome started it and here I am...

Now, while trying to play Dead Space I started trying any key combination I can think of, I found out holding any one of the two Alt keys would fix the problem, but only as long as I held one of them down... which like I said is very annoying while trying to kill things...

Has no one with this problem tried holding the alt key yet?

And just so everyone knows I've run 3 different virus scans (Norton, McAfee, and Malware) all coming up with no results >.>

I just finished a malware scan and found nothing, as well as a few other virus scans including Mcafee and avira, no results. Also tried plugging in different keyboards with no results.

Also I tried holding the alt key, and this fixed my problem playing Left 4 Dead 2, could it be that the computer is putting us into an alternate control layout when we open certain programs?

Can you open your keyboard settings and see what setting you have up?

It should be normal USA format.
