keyboard shortcut for increasing volume (not in media player)

I've searched everywhere, including the help in windows 7 (when you click F1).
I need a keyboard shortcut for increasing and decreasing volume, and I don't mean when playing a video or something, I mean the "general" one.

What I do is not quite so simple:
WIN + X key combo | slide the volume slider the Volume section
WIN = key with microsoft logo on top.

so you first need to hit the win key+x combo (that opens the "Windows Mobility Center" dialog) and then hit the "tab" key twice to get to the volume slice and then use the up/down or left/right to increase or decrease volume.

nice but that's a lot of work when the volume is high and you got 3 seconds before you husband gets pissed from it.

isn't there a key shortcut to open the "Speakers" tray? the one you have on the right corner of the taskbar? that's all I need

Why don't you just configure the Notification Area to always show the speaker icon in the system tray? Then it's just a case of clicking on the slider and adjusting it.



Alternatively, have you considered using headphones? They will mute the speaker sound and let you have the sound as loud as you want.

There are no built in shortcuts to control the volume. You can create a shortcut to open the volume control in the taskbar but it won't work when a full screen app is activated (http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/198081-volume-shortcut-create.html). You can write a script using AutoHotkey, you should be able to find a few scripts via Google.

No matter which way you create a keyboard shortcut you have to be careful what key combination you use because if certain apps have focus and the app already uses that shortcut for some function then it won't work.

Anyway how many programs is this a issue in? Most apps will have there own shortcuts and if it's not a fullscreen app it only takes 2sec to click the taskbar icon and lower it if you do what seavixen posted.
