Kingston and PNY found changing SSD components

One user bought a new PNY SSD expecting a Silicon Motion controller, but when they checked their new SSD found that it now had a sand force controller. It's not clear that this meant a performance degradation but the customer wasn't pleased to get a product different from what was commonly reviewed.

Another case involving Kingston they switched from synchronous to asynchronous NAND flash. This rendered the revised Kingston V300 SSD much slower than the version that was widely well reviewed.

Sounds like a new scheme where a company puts out a screaming product to gain positive reviews, then does a bait & switch with cheaper components while hoping no one would be the wiser. That's clearly false advertisement.

At One thing the author failed to mention is that Kingston has always said on their web site that this is an entry level SSD and they would change suppliers and manufacturers of their parts to try to keep prices relevant. That can't exactly be called a bait and switch when they said they would do it. I fault the Author for failing to mention that. I guess it would have made him have to work for something to write about.

I have just purchased 2 of those KINGSTON SV300S37A120G based on price and the particular PC's they were going in. An Asus EePC and a Dell T3400 Precision Workstation with a Core Duo Quad at 2.44 Ghz 4gb ram 32 bit Windows 7. In the case of the netbook it was like night and day. The computer became very snappy and usable instead of taking 5 minis to boot with its 5400rpm Hard Drive and Atom dual core CPU. A worthwile upgrade as we hardly use the thing except for travelling holidays etc.
The Workstation has a Windows experience score of 6.8 (Graphics card) and the SATA SSD drive rates 7.5. It is a sandforce controller in the SSD. The computer is really snappy and much more responsive. I think it is a SATA II 3gb machine as it was made in Feb 2009. A low cost upgrade for 120gb of OS goodness. I can only recommend them for the use I have put them to. Very pleased.
