Kiosk mode operation

Hi all,

I am trying to investigate a solution for the secure deployment of applications that may be developed independently.

The desired scenario is that you switch on the machine and it boots up. There may be a log-on, but the desired outcome is that only a specific application may be used by an ordinary operator.

An example implementation of this using Windows CE for devices is that you edit the registry to prevent the explorer process from starting, and make the OS launch your application immediately - there is no access to the OS or the desktop. You handle the login yourself. If an admin logs in then you may launch the explorer process from your application which recovers access to the OS. Naturally when you reboot there is no OS access again. This is largely known as Kiosk mode operation.

Is it possible to emulate this behaviour somehow with Windows 7?

Have you tried the same method? You may be plesently surprised to find it works.

The launching of the windows shell is probably the same. I rememebr it was some line like "shell=explorer" in the registry. I would give the CE method a try right off if you have that information handy already. A lot of these low level internals are the same whenever possible between all windows versions, CE included.
