Solved LAN connection problem - wont connect to Router

Hi, hopefully someone can help me as I am going mad...

Desktop wireless connection works, but slow. The wired connection will not work. I get internet if I plug the LAN cable into my laptop, but if I plug it into the desktop, just "you are not connected to a network"
I tried several things elsewhere on the forum

* Uninstalling, reinstalling network adapter driver
* "netsh winsock reset", "netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt", "ipconfig /flushdns"
* Changing LAN cable
* Connecting to another PC
* Changing "Speed and duplex" settings
* Turning off firewall
* Reseting and restarting router
if I do ipconfig/release I get "This operation failed as no adapter is in the state permissible for this operation"
The Tunnel adapter says media disconnected. Is this the problem?

If so, how can I fix it?

Your System Specs really says nothing useful about the computer. Some Desktop computers were available with both a Network Adapter built-in and with either an Add-in Network Adapter card or built-in. I've seen where turning off the computer and pulling the power cord out of the back for a couple of minutes help with several things on the motherboard, might try that. In a Command Prompt window might try ping 192.168.x.x [where x = the IP for your Router] to see if you get a response, tests whether the adapter and cable work. Not all Routers use the same base IP numbers and it is not shown as to what your make and model is.

Hi, sorry for incomplete info. Have added it now, missesd that bit. Asus motherboard, the network adapter is Realtek RTL8186C/8111C, wireless is on the same card RTL 8187. Drivers all up to date, device working normally. Router is the one Sky (I see you are in the US - Sky are UK satellite TV and broadband/fibre provider) supply with their fibre, don't know who make it. But the cable to the router works fine - tested it connected to the laptop, just will not work on the desktop. Pinged the router and it says destination host unreachable

Do you think the adapter is faulty?

What you have done does suggest the NIC/built-in adapter in the Desktop on the motherboard is bad. An Add-in PCI NIC is not expensive, much cheaper than a new motherboard or new computer. Disable the built-in in the BIOS before plugging in the new card. And pull the power cord out of the back then press the power button to drain off residual power before adding/changing things like cards or memory modules.
