Hi Guys

Im looking for some help with my notebook. The last week or so ive felt it was starting to run a little hotter than usual but im struggling to work out what the true temperatures are.
Ive installed SIW and Speccy and both report my 2 cores are running between 80-85 celcius and my HD at 49 celcius which i would have thought was a little hot.(whilst running light programs) However my intel desktop gadget reports cores 10 degrees lower than this which seem a little more normal for a notebook. The TjMax for the cores according to intels website is 90 celcius which is programed into the gadget so my question is which temperatures are correct. The gadget which takes into account the max temp of the cores or speccy and siw. Also if anyone has any suggestions on how to help cool her that would be appreciated. Ive done the usual cleaning of the fan and blowing through with some compressed air but temps seem to stay constant
Thankyou

Does your Laptop bios show the temps? Have a look at those if it does.

Always put you Laptop on a flat surface, avoid: Your Lap, quilts, cushions etc. I some times put mine on a plastic kitchen tray upside down when I use it!! :D

Hope this helps!

Hi Anthony

Ive looked in the BIOS but no temps in there. Its always been sat in the same place on my pc desk so nothing changed there.Ive even tried like you said and raised it up to increase air flow but no change.Any idea on which temps are more likely to be correct.
Thanks Danny

If you have noticed it running hotter, we should take some steps to bring temperatures back down. If you have a can of air and a vacuum handy, I would try blowing in the exhaust port, and having the vacuum ready to suck up the dust and what that comes out.

A visual inspection of the fan, if possible, might reveal more than dust. If you have pets (or shed a bit), hair and what can easily be sucked into the cooling mechanism, clogging the fan, or throwing off the CFM that the fan pushes. But a good canned air cleaning is a start ^_^

Hi Liquidsnack
I cant get to the fan directly without taking her apart which im not to confident in doing but i have tried the vacuum and compressed air trick. I can see through the fan slots and exhaust with a torch and it does appear clear. The fan never sounds overly active and although nearly always running is really quiet.I have tried apps such as speedfan to monitor speeds but none of them recognise the fan.Im just concerned at the fact intel say max temps for the cpu is 90 and some apps are saying im running at 85. Shes only 6 months old lol

Thankyou

Edit Which temperatures would you trust do apps like siw and speccy take into account the manufacturers max temps

Max temperature does not affect current temperature. As much as I would like to back up manufacturers, I believe that third party programs that monitor the motherboard directly accurate. What all programs have you tried to monitor temperatures?

xxxdannyxxx, can you hear the fans? On my laptop they kick in every now and then and you can hear them doing it!!

The fans should kick in when your system gets over a certain temp, could be your fans are not working!! Please make sure you are 100% sure your fans are working!!

Ive just installed core temp and their desktop gadget and that backs up siw and speccy with temps around 85. But thats assuming the max temp for the cores is set at 100. If i change the setting to 90 like intel says the temps drop by 10 degrees to around 75. Im getting more confused by the second. Why should altering the max temp setting to prevent overheating drop the temps by 10 degrees thats rubbish.
Im stumped now you said max temp does not affect current temp which i would agree with so why would changing the TjMax temp to 90 insted of 100 drop my temps by 10 degrees. If its hot its hot right.

Thanks for your patience my lappys not the only thing gettin hot at the moment

Hi Liquidsnack
The fans are for sure working they are running now and if i set malwarebytes and mse off for a full scan you can hear the the speeds increase.

Cpuid also has my temps at 85 celcius so i think its safe to say im running hot and maybee intels gadget is a bad one to use as its 5 against 1 now lol.Ive just sat outside for 15 mins with my notebook (its 2 degrees here) and my temps have dropped right off. I wonder how much central heating has a part to play at this time of year.My better half has got it on full at the moment.I think i will invest in one of those chill pads you mentioned though they sound a good idea. How did these work for you

Chill pads are great. They are the right mix of powerful and portable. Do you transport your laptop a lot, or does it sit in one place most of the time? There are other options that I would recommend based on your usage of the laptop :)
