Hi every1, hows it going

currently ive got a desktop pc, dual core 2.4ghz cpu and 4gb ram. nothing wrong with it but in general im after creating some space in the house and feel a laptop is the way forward.

most ppl have told me get a macbook, but i want 1 with a 17" screen and refuse pay the amounts that macbooks cost, around £1600 for a 17" one.

now ive been looking at these 2 laptops, HP Pavillion DV7-6103ea or Samsung RC720

both around £700 or so is the cheapest ive found

is just to do general things on it, watch movies/blu-ray, plus running vdj or traktor pro (digital dj software), both need around 4gb to run smoothly

any alternatives are appreciated, but no more than £750 in total

thanks

Matt

In view of the fact that HP are apparently going to stop making computers you might want to consider that when making your choice.

You haven't said where you live, but John Lewis here in the UK have a Toshiba Satellite L775-13D you might want to consider.

It's considered to be a desktop replacement and has a Blu-Ray optical drive, an Intel Core i5 2.3 Ghz CPU, 6 Gb of RAM, a 640 Gb hard drive, a 17.3" display and has a silver casing.

It retails at £729 and you'll also get a free 2-year warranty.

Twist:
I have had nothing but good luck with the Toshiba's that I have bought since a 286 model way back when.
I now have a intel core 2 dual with SSD drives and it works great.

I don't recommend only shopping for price. look at capabilities that you want.

I have dos 6.22, wfwg 3.11, win98, 2000 and xp VHD's available for testing. MS's Virtual PC works great.
Give Dell a look. I presently own four of them. I just donated an older one when I upgraded and it had never given me any trouble. That's 5 for 5. They're also well priced.

thanks for the recommendation, ill have a look into them

from uk btw

had a look at that toshiba, looks nice, pretty much the same as the samsung except samsung has 750gb hd and 8gb, neither are a major issue though, and the toshiba has better graphics card. bonus of the toshiba being the 2yr warranty with johnlewis.

didnt no that HP were stopping making them soon

would you notice the difference in the i5 2.3ghz cpu and the HP's quad core?

Well, the extra hard drive space is always useful, but I doubt you'd notice much difference with the extra RAM.

I think the better graphics and free warranty are well worth considering.

I mentioned HP because they are going down the same route that IBM did who went into software and let the hardware side go to Lenovo.

HP have bought a software company from Cambridge called Autonomy and have said they'll stop making PCs and concentrate on the mobile and software market.

As for your last point, I'm not sure on that one.

I know it might sound blasphemous but have you considered an apple laptop? I know my friends (and many djs/producers) who use dj software prefer them. I run VDJ on my ASUS desktop just fine - no operational issues at all.

but I'm also in the market and am considering an ASUS laptop - I hope it has the processing power for vdj or Traktor

also: what do you dj/produce?

i have considered an apple laptop, but for 1 with a 17" screen they are around £1600 for the cheapest and i just cant budget for that much

i dont produce, but dj music thats a bit harder, stuff called hardstyle and dutch hardcore/industrial, but also like hard trance, trance, electro, hard techno

oh Techno Viking, I started spinning with gabber and hard acid

I currently spin techno (minimal, detroit, swedish, acid), deep, funky, tribal, tech-house, dnb and downtempo - I think my hardest sounding genre is dnb

been doing it since 96, still have my trusty 1200s but going digital obviously

do you use a controller with your vdj? If so - what brand?

I've been sitting on getting the Traktor X1, seems it's the new industry standard

ive got the hercules 4mx, not had it that long if im honest so im no superstar dj, but its a cheaper way to learn dj'ing than it is to get cdj's etc. there aint many controllers you can get for vdj really

not looking to go further than bedroom dj tbh as got 2 much commitment with work as i do 4 on 4 off shifts, days and nights.

may possibly in the future look at gettin traktor, but i think its a bit more complecated than vdj, so ill wait til i get better at that.

yeah I heard that hercules is the best if not the only compatible brand for vdj - they have some decent models - obviously not Traktor or Allen Heath, but it works.

no biggie about the bedroom dj gig - it's a good way to relax and enjoy your music, the way you want to hear it - the internet has many options to share mixes

mixcloud.com and destinedtolive.com/ are good outlets. I have yet to sign up to the latter but have friends who put mixes up.

I've gone from bedroom dj to club/party dj to computer dj - never made it big but had some memorable and impressionable gigs. I wouldn't mind gigging again, but it can be a hassle if you don't have the money nor resources.

I might be lugging my tables out for a triphop night though - but I will need to get paid, can't do this for free (or beers) anymore.

mixcloud and destinedtolive are two good sites for mix uploading
