Laptop buying!

I bought a Acer laptop for my boss at the time and it was stellar.....still is to the best of my knowledge. Toshiba would be my first choice, I like the Asus but they are a bit clunky and Lenovo's seem to be mainly boring business machines. Wouldn't a full size keyboard be better for this typing intense application?

I am only taking a college course the notes are not that of a university level, and I am used to small keys since I have qwerty on my cell phone and I can type in messages without looking, I am not worried about the keyboard.

Eee PC netbooks sound like the place for you to look, then. Long battery life, portable, etc.

In the sense that the Atom processors of the netbooks use a lot less electricity than the processors that are usually being put into the laptops. Thus you can often run a netbook on battery only for 5 to 7 hours without recharging whilst a laptop typically runs for 2 to 3 hours only.

Agreed - I normally don't consider netbooks at all but then again I've never really prioritized mobility; my laptops are pretty much always plugged in. But for something a student would want to carry around, max battery time would be important. Between classes, labs, breaks etc you'll be moving around quite a bit... you really don't want something that runs out of power in only 2-3 hours.

I love the function of netbooks, but I have two hams where my hands should be, and it's difficult for me to type on a netbook keypad. If you have large hands, you might consider something else, since student=notes=typing a fair bit.

This has up to 9 hours of battery life and it is currently at staples for 329 dollars so I said what the hey its pretty decent!

Well there you go, it looks like a decent netbook. Oh yeah, my college experience reminds me to let you know you may want to buy a decent laptop haversack bag (the good ones are waterproof too, good when you get caught in a bit of light rain). Food stains and water spills are a definite hazard especially if you have lunch with your study group.

I am using the Advanced Tactical Briefcase. The laptop part is very nicely padded and forms to your laptop form. When I fist got it it was very tight and after a few days it was still firm but fit to my laptop
Not to mention its almost water tight and the main compartment is gortex lined to keep the rest of your goods dry.

Keep it simple and cheap. Go with a sleeve and always protect it. Offers great protection in the backpack or not!
