My laptop can't run for more than 3hrs straight. It freezes [usually in Chrome or when I'm watching a movie in bs player or vlc.] and after a minute or two it gives me a bsod saying Driver power state failure OR IRQL not less or equal.

I tried reinstalling windows several times and that didn't solve it. Recently I used Driver Genius 11 and it found some missing and outdated drivers. I updated them but that didn't solve it either. I have no idea what to do. I've been battling with this problem for about 2-3 months now.

Any help will be highly appreciated.

P.S. I noticed that it never does this when gaming [gta iv , counter strike:go or team fortress 2]
P.P.S. someone said that it could be related to high temperatures. the CPU is just below 50 and GPU at a constant 40-45 Celsius when idle. Asus said that the temperatures are ok.

The zip you uploaded does not contain any crash dump.

Follow it: http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/174459-dump-files-configure-windows-create-bsod.html
Go to Option Two, Point 2. Download the .reg file and merge it in registry by double clicking it.

Now wait for another BSOD. When it occurred, search the .dmp files manually in the default path: C:\Windows\Minidump or %SystemRoot%\Minidump. See if the crash dump is recorded or not (hopefully it will be recorded).Post it following the Blue Screen of Death (BSOD) Posting Instructions.

Dont run any disk cleanup tool before you upload another zip.

Also. is the computer hot? Report us the heat of the computer after a couple of hours of your normal usage. Upload a screenshot of the summery tab of Speccy.

The issue is with nvidia Optimus. But I am not able to suggest the best action here.

Plus, you monitor the temps. See if it increases with time from what is stated in the screenshot.

I will ask for others opinion in this thread.

Don't use third party software or drivers for system hardware unless directed by ASUS. You should be getting your drivers from ASUS. Especially the "Chipset" INF files. Do a clean install of Windows then apply updates from this link ONLY. *** Do this ONLY if your Laptop is model N56VM as stated in your specs. *** There's a discrepancy with your BIOS date also so something is not right. Your MSInfo file couldn't be opened so I couldn't look.

My model is N56VB [and on the asus website they don't have anything for windows 7.]

@carwiz the nvidia link doesn't work for me. I've done the whole clean reinstall of windows about 5 or 6 times now and it didn't solve it. It had this problem before I tried the 3rd party drivers.

I have the latest nvidia drivers [I checked the website and the nvidia experience program] and on the Intel website when I do the online test it says that the driver is valid and up to date.

The bios is up to date as well. I tried updating it at some point but it wouldn't let me because I already had the latest version.

Today I went to the IT desk at university and they did some diagnostics and told me that there's nothing wrong with the hardware. They told me to set it to use the nvidia graphics only and this seems to be more or less a fix because today it hasn't crashed....but I'm still not comfortable with it...

Ok, I guess I misread the model in your spec. Disregard the specific links.

Your machine came with Windows 8. Probably why the debugger flagged the driver as a no-match. Your laptop may need chip specific INF files to tell Windows how to service the hardware. Not sure how you'll get those. The INF files are specific to the chip sets used by the manufacturer (ASUS). The Win8 INF files may not load under Windows 7 but you could check and try. And if you have dual graphics, disabling the built-in graphics will cause the PC to draw more power. Many laptops are designed to switch back and forth as needed for the graphics load.

I know about the switching back and forth part. It's how it was set in the nvidia control panel. Right now I set it to use just the nvidia graphics all the time and so far it hasn't crashed [system uptime: 7hrs and 11 minutes right now. ]

The laptop didn't came with windows preinstalled. It just has a cd with drivers for windows 8. I tried using that but it's not compatible with 7.

I've just found this and I'm gonna try it out. https://downloadcenter.intel.com/De...hipset+Software+Installation+Utility&lang=eng

Hmm on the site it only lists drivers for 8 N56VB - Notebooks & Ultrabooks - ASUS this lists drivers for others try it

But an option I would have thought if you wipe the drive and stuck an OEM in then it should load drivers for audio graphics USN etc

@carwiz I installed the thing but it did nothing.

@ICit2lol Asus told me that they haven't tested windows 7 on "these machines". When I asked them who are they to make me use a certain OS, they just apologized and "strongly recommended against it" .
I didn't really understand the OEM part. Like..install an OEM version of 7 ?

Right now it's working (more or less) as it's supposed to, but keep in mind that I selected to use the nvidia graphics card only. To me, right now, this is more of a temporary fix, because it's supposed to be able to use both the intel integrated graphics and the nvidia card and switch between them without crashing.

You guys have been really helpful so far and if you have any other suggestions they will be extremely appreciated :)

This seems a bit ridiculous to me as I run 8.1 on machines that were never tested as suitable. I suppose the only way is to get a new hard drive and a 7 OEM and install. If that worked then the "old" drive can wiped and used as a back up.

Now an alternative is to use the 8 as it came and get it looking like 7 with one of the Start up programs like Classic Shell (free) or Stardock8 ($5).
http://www.classicshell.net/ or http://www.stardock.com/products/start8/ I have both only because I used Stardock before I realised there were others and now use the Classic Shell.

If you still have 8 on board to get to a desktop just hit the Win key + X and click on desktop at the bottom.

Mind you it will be different than 7 in items in the Control Panel etc and takes a bit of working out.

@ICit2lol My laptop didn't come with any OS preinstalled. It just had a CD with drivers compatible only with Windows 8.

I know I have the alternative of using 8, but I just can't stand it. I watched review videos on youtube and I try not to hate it but I still hate it.

By the way, I don't know much about OEM versions of Windows. If I install one, what will be the advantages ?

Well Kevil in a nutshell an OEM is short for Original Equipment Manufacturer and is an edition of the OS that is installed as a once off onto a machine. That means that builders both commercial (they hold a licence for this software) and you and I can install Windows for example onto a build without having to pay for the retail version.
The catch is that means that the OEM version is tied to the first motherboard it comes into contact with and cannot be installed onto another machine (or board).

The advantages are it is cheaper and is bloat ware free ie you don't get a lot of commercial brands crapware installed as well. Now if the board ever goes bad then Microsoft are usually pretty good at letting you put it onto a new board it is only a phone call away. Mind you if you did this too many times it would look rather suspicious.

To be honest I cannot see why that machine could not accept the 7 OEM it does not make a lot of sense to me.

The alternative is to install the 8 and do as I suggested but again the systems are slightly different 7 is much easier to use but the 8 I find is quicker ie my laptop I ma on now is five times faster booting and going between programs than it was.

See pic of me right now this is 8.1 with the Stradock8 set up.
