Hey there, ok I bought this laptop in september. I did not have the internet on it, so this is not a virus... the internet came installed with vista, and I got the coupon for free windows 7 upgrade

PROBLEM -- every time I turn the laptop on, the icons disappear.. I right click on the desktop and 'show desktop icons' IS ticked.. so I untick it, and retick it, then the icons appear again.
after a few hours they disappear again... also I can customise the desktop to have a picture or even a plain background like bright yellow.. but it will reset the background when it removes the icons

I thought this was a stupid windows vista issue so installed the win7 upgrade. and the problem has continued

hours and days of googling have not helped me at all.
so I don't know if its to do with a registry issue or perhaps one of those stupid power saving laptop capabilities.

does anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like a bad install of Vista that carried over into Seven. A clean install is your best bet.

I don't believe it's a bad install OR a virus.. I believe it is something to do with the power saver settings program that comes with the laptop.. but can't figure out how to fix

I found this in a forum
Vista Home Premium Desktop Icons Disappear On Startup but can't figure out how to change the setting they're talking about

Can you see the "Power" icon in the system tray. That should be at the bottom right of your screen. If you see it click it and see what opens.look for something like "Power Plan" and click that!
