After installing some updates, my laptop's dvd drive has stopped showing up in device manager/my computer (well, in a way...but more on that momentarily) and will not read DVDs and CDs (annoying, post Christmas).

When I say that it is not shown in device manager, it is not shown as a recognised device, (there are 2 devices in 'other devices' which have little yellow triangles - 'coprocessor' and 'unknown device', I think the dvd drive is the unknown device). I've tried scanning for drivers and nothing comes up which fix the problem. I then tried a registry fix (as seen here: http://www.windows7news.com/2009/01/15/windows-7-not-recognizing-dvd-drive/).

The laptop is an HP Pavillion dv9700 (it came with vista but I installed windows 7 post purchase), and everything else runs fine, but it has had some issues booting while a cd was in the drive before I changed to boot order to not include the cd drive until after the hard drive (it hung at the motherboard logo if there was a disc in the drive, or at best took a long time to move past it if there was not disc in the drive when it was before the hard drive in the boot order)

It is probably just a driver. whats the make and model of it?

Ok, so I was running few a through potential fixes, and one suggested uninstalling the unknown device in the device manager, however, it did not recognize it on a reboot, and now there is no recognition of any drive on my pc, other than a BD-Rom Drive (from Daemon Tools Lite)
