Should a laptop fan initiate at power on as a rule or is that laptop specific? My Lenovo fan spins up at power on but my Acer does not. In fact I don't see that the fan ever spins on the Acer and it does get quite hot to touch. Anyone else out there with Acer laptops?

I have an Acer laptop and the fan doesn't blow much unless I'm doing something really processor heavy. Then it runs fairly fast. I think they just run at a low speed normally. At least mine does, and it's brand new.

Check the "Power Options" in control panel, and make sure that the "Processor Power Management/System Cooling Policy" in the Advanced settings for your plan is set to "Active".

Much better since I got fiber, but still way overpriced.

On my wife's ACER the fan does turn on when its powered up. Seems to be at a low speed. Low air flow and you can only just barely hear it running. On my ASUS laptop it turns on at full speed during boot up, then slows down again to a low speed. If it gets hot it speeds up again.

The factory machine had glopped on two blops of thermal paste that were obviously inadequate because most of it was not on the cpu or the logic chip but around them. Both chips had shine where nary a drop of paste had attached. Now, when I turn on the laptop the fan spins up. I would have thought the fan should spin up anyhow so maybe I had a bad connect after the first tear down but the fan is attached to the mobo and I had never removed that...maybe loosened it. Wish I hadn't forgot to attach the optical drive...another tear down in the near future
