Unfortunately, my laptop got so bad that I can't even enter BIOS anymore. I received an RMA from my computer manufacturer, and I'm hoping I won't have to pay additional fees/hoping my warranty wasn't voided from the OS changes I made. I'll post an update on what the problem was when my computer comes back. (If they find the problem, that is)Personally I would wipe or clean all that drive and format it before trying to install anything I don't know what Greg thinks but I would suspect it is clogged with bits and pieces or the drive is shot.
Have you access to another computer to see what is on that drive if not you could try this.
BOOTABLE UBUNTU
Make a bootable Ubuntu disk http://www.ubuntu.com/download
Set the BIOS to boot from theoptical when the machine boots it will show you a screen with TRY or INSTALL> select TRYnot INSTALL
When it is finished - it takes verylittle time you will get a screen like in the pic .
Open the drive you want > Userand dig down until you get to the data / settings you may be able to copy /paste the material you want to an external source or other installed drive doingthis.
I am not sure if it will but I haverecovered tons of data etc using this method both on "dead" or justplain drives that you cannot get data from using Windows.
You have access to the net and may even be able to run tests on it via that venue - I don't know as I have never actually had to try that.
There is also a bootable Partition Wizard too Partition Wizard Bootable CD allows user to manage partition directly with partition manager bootable CD. that may helpful too.
