I'm having a problem with this laptop after changing out the ram.
It's a Lenovo 3000n100, running win7 32bit. ( I upgraded from Vista.)

It originally came with 1GB ram, I increased it to 2 GB. It shows in the bios as 2 and also in belarc.

After changing out the ram, about every other time I start it up, when it gets to the logon screen, the pointer is frozen. I can log in, and on the desktop it's also frozen, so I have to use the win key and arrows to restart then it starts up normally. Once in a while, when it get to the logon screen, it's just black and then I have to do a hard shut down.

I changed the ram sticks around, made sure they are seated properly and I still have this problem.

Before buying the ram, I ran the crucial advisor and bought Amazon.com: Crucial 2GB Set(2x1GB) 200-Pin PC2 5300 667Mhz SODIMM DDR2 RAM: Electronics

IRC, I didn't have this problem with the original ram 512x2. Not even sure if it's a ram problem or not, but I haven't been able to figure out what's going on.

I have also checked the intel drivers and they are up to date.

Can anyone give me a clue as to what I should do?

Have you checked if there is a bios update for your laptop?

Is the touchpad software that is installed on your laptop called Alps?

Yes, first thing I did on boot up was to check the BIOS to make sure the RAM was recognized.

The pointer is Synaptics Touch Pad V.6.2

In all due respect... please don't be tossing out the "BIOS Update" thing as a first line suggestion. There's just way too much that can go wrong for the average person and if it does go wrong they could end up with a really expensive way of holding their tables down... and not much more.

Keeners... I've had some problems with the Synaptics drivers from time to time. My Acer Netbook gave me similar problems and I solved them by going back a couple of versions in the drivers... It seems there are some Win7 compatibility issues and the older drivers (say 2 or 3 versions back) don't seem to have the problem.

You should uninstall your synaptics drivers and see if the touchpad works normally without the drivers (it will emulate a microsoft mouse)... then IF you still want the driver enhancements, download a couple of different versions then install, test, uninstall until you find one that works....

Thanks, Im going to give this a try.

You don't think this has anything to do with the ram upgrade?

Ok,I went into device manager and uninstalled the synaptics driver from there.

rebooted.

Got to the logon screen and it was black. Did a hard shut down, started up again, this time the logon screen was frozen. Hard shut down again. This time I was able to log in normally.

Went back to device manager, checked the pointer/mouse driver and it DID NOT unsinstall itself.

Actually it probably re-installed itself. Win7 does that...

Keep in mind this could still be a RAM problem... A big hint would be that all this started right after you cracked the covers and did the upgrade.

Did you check the memory you purchased agains't your laptop's compatibility list? (manufacturer's website)

Have you run the memory diagnostic in Win7? (Check the Tutorials section)

If upgrading required you to disconnect the touchpad's cable from the MoBo did you check to see if it's correctly re-installed?

Ok, I ran the memory diagnostic in Win7 and it reported no problems were found.

Before I bought the ram, I ran the crucial ram tester and it identified my ram as what Lenovo recommended.

The slot for the ram is in a different spot from the Mobo, so I didn't have to mess with that.
I also re-checked that the ram sticks were in properly and also changed positions, ie, swapping out between slot 1 and slot 2.

Thank you for the help you've given me so far. Got any more suggestions?

Just one, then I'll take the backseat and let the others jump in here...

Have you tried plugging in a USB mouse? At least that would tell you for certain if it's the touchpad or not... (and yes, touchpads do go bad...)

Also I see you're on a NVidia chipset...
This might work for you, at least it did for me...

Ok... Without it sitting on my workbench...I'm out of stuff you can try.

Ok, I did that yesterday. Turned the laptop on/off and did several restarts with no freezing up. :)

No. That's my main computer. See under other. This Lenovo laptop has an Intel 945 mobil express chipset.

I'm going to uninstall the Synaptics program and download one directly from synaptics that includes Win7 support.

Thank you again for all your help.

Bumping this up because I still have the same problem.

On this laptop:

Lenovo3000n100 0768-A52
Win 7x32
Intel T2060 120 GB HDD 2 GB ram
Intel Mobil express 945 chipset

I've been working around this doing the following:

On first boot up, when I get to the logon screen, the cursor is frozen. The actual logon on screen looks a bit stretched ? for lack of a better word.
I can sign in, when I get to the desktop, I click the Win button, use the -> to log out and hit R to restart.

Reboot, then all is well when I get to the logon screen and enter my p/w and the cursor works properly.

It's the only time the cursor freezes. It works fine the rest of the time. I have already done all the above listed suggestions.

If anyone can add any idea why this happens, I would really apreciate it.
