Aged HP G62 laptop is reporting 265% charge on a new battery - has anyone run into this before?

The machine was failing to boot on battery, so I suspected the battery was bad and replaced it. It boots up fine on power but temperamentally (sometimes hangs at logo screen) or not at all, from the new battery.

Hi,

go to device manager and uninstall ACPI-compliant method battery and restart see if it changes anything.

EDIT: the battery might need to be calibrated

Tried various variations on the first solution - there are it turns out, a boatload of these issues out there and they all have Windows 7 in common. So far, this solution has not worked. I don't have access to the BIOS to verify (or change) anything that may be incorrect there. I was able to uninstall the ACPI battery, and it was detected during the new hardware scan.

My first thought was calibration, but so far the laptop reports the battery as plugged in but not charging - so I can't really calibrate that. I did check the advanced settings, and nothing is amiss there.

do you have another ac adapter to test with. it could be a faulty adapter. is the new battery a direct replacement from manufacture or a generic one?

I don't have another adapter, but since it powers the laptop just fine without the battery, its output would seem normal. I replaced the battery with a generic (which swears to be 100% compatible and meet warranty spec) because the original displays just these symptoms. The HP Battery Check is unable to access (either) battery when installed.

I bet that this is your problem. Unfortunately although it is more cost effective to go with a generic you only get full compatibility with the manufacturer's battery. The battery check is unable to access it because it isn't truly compliant.
