You may be thinking “but what’s the point of this program if the guy will probably just format the thing right away?” and you’re completely right. However, experience shows that thieves tend to look in stolen computers for valuable information, so there’s actually a chance you can catch the guy (and there’s even some successful cases!).

Of course, Prey needs to have an active Internet connection to send the information. If the computer isn’t connected, Prey will attempt to connect to the nearest open wifi access point available.

I guess if there's a slim chance of capture then its worth that little extra peace of mind.
im reminded of software for a webcam that switches on when it detects motion and texts your phone it also can send you live footage to your phone , a chap went from UK to Australia on business and got an alert from webcam he was able to see the burglary in progress and call the local police to say what was happening . they were busted and imprisoned ,that said i cannot recall the software anyone knows please post

I use lojack for laptops.. and I highly recommend it for anyone with the hardware to support it. Someone broke a window in my daughter's car a few months back to steal her laptop, and it was recovered within a week, after the thief had wiped the HDD and installed a hacked copy of windows. It installs at bios level and even if someone replaces the HDD, it reinstalls itself in the background.. absolutely worth the money
