Hi!

Could you give me some advice please. I have a Sony vaio laptop using windows 7. My apartment in this summer is very hot. In my lounge where I was using the laptop the room temperature was 32 degrees c...and I had the laptop on my lap with no cooling pad underneath. I could feel the laptop getting hot but I stupidly continued to surf the net. All of a sudden the blue screen of death came on for about 10 seconds .To the best of my memory it said something like " CRASH DUMP.. WRITING DATA TO DISC..IF THIS IS THE FIRST TIME THIS HAS OCCURED START COMPUTER AS NORMAL. (" it is the first time this has happened). There was a lot of other text on the blue screen but I can`t remember it. My questions are...

1, IF my laptop overheated and automatically shut down is it normal for the blue screen of death to appear...OR should it have stated "shutting down..overheat or something like that?

2, I have been using the laptop after it cooled down for the last 2 hours and it is fine. could I have caused any damage if it was overheating?. I have run a diagnostic with Norton 360 and it says everything ok. I have had a blue screen happen on another laptop years ago but everytime I turned the laptop back on it crashed again..this HASN`T happened with my sony vaio now. I am going to buy a cooling pad tomorrow but any advice greatly appreciated.

Many thanks

Hi dimmy,

Overheating could cause corruption in the RAM, which is probably why you saw a BSOD. RAM is wiped after a reboot, corruption gone.

Laptops are capable of handling quite a high temperature. The CPU of my laptop can come near 100C without issue (not for too long though).

Hi! Thanks for the reply...that has put my mind at rest and the laptop working fine since BSOD. I just wish the BSOD would stay on longer so I could read it all (IF there is a next time I will press print screen)...better still rather than the BSOD appearing due to an overheat you think it would display a message like " overheat safety shutdown in progress"...or similar. I am going to buy a cooling pad as my home is so hot..thanks!

If a temp limit has been reached, some systems shutdown on behalf of the BIOS that has the temp limits programmed. You don't even get a message then.
