Prior to installing W7, I checked the HP website to make sure that drivers were available fo rHP 1018 laser jet printer, it was. I install W7, go to HP to get my driver for 1018 and lo and behold, it really is not available, until middle of November. I would like to print now. Can anyone give me step by step how to download a Vista 64 bit driver for 1018, in lieu of the driver that is not now available.

I tried a download, Vista 64 bit to my W7, using normal procedure and all I get is a freeze, just before installation.

Hi RichC, welcome to windows 7 forum. Yep, its true! Hp won't have any drivers out til middle of November. There are several ways that you will be able to get your laserjet to work with windows 7.
The first method is to run the driver in compatability mode. If you know where you put your driver executible place your mouse pointer over it and right click on it. Now you will see a dropdown menu which at the middle point it shows you run compatable mode. You will see a couple of OS such as XP, Vista etc. Depending on what version of OS-7 you are using, X64 or X86 select the vista version in the drop down menu. Next come up and run the installation as administrator.
Try this first and tell us how it went.
If this method failed we have a couple of other work arounds to try.:geek:

So I have the same printer and I use Windows 7 64bit. I've tried this, didn't work for me.

I tried installing using the vista 32 and 64 bit "plug and play" and "print driver package" drivers, all ran as administrator and in vista compatibility (tried vista, vista S1 and vista S2 compatibility).

The 64 bit drivers would go into a loop during installation and keep asking to make sure I plugged in the printer. The 32 bit drivers would "finish installation successfully" but afterwards the printer still wasn't recognized as a working device and I still could not print anything.

I tried the 64 bit drivers again just now and now they don't even enter the installation after extraction now for some reason...

(Yes I tried restarting my laptop after each of these installations)

Adrian, please educate me on these other methods that could work!

Thanks.

I am sure adrian would be more than happy to help you, but let me tell you exactly what I did. First get rid of any old drivers, actually uninstall your printer, (basically start from scratch). Make sure all traces of your printer are off your HD, especially drivers. Then go to the HP website, choose plug and play, for Vista 64 bit. Choose, save not run. It will save to your document folder. Then right click on the driver link, in documents, and choose run as XP. (mine did not give me a Vista selection). It should then install the driver and you should be able to print.

Strangely enough, after hibernating my laptop, the drivers seemed to work. I had restarted several times without the computer identifying the printer, but after accidentally hibernating it, it found the printer.

Thanks anyway
