On opening Firefox this morning there is a notification saying "unable to update - system incompatible". I have been running the extended version for many months but understood it was supported until September 2024?

The latest ESR for Firefox 159.9.0 had a few bugs. I couldn't play any games on the AARP website until I closed and re-stared Firefox. IMDB had a weird display problem also, but I cleared that my deleting IMDB cookies. I hope that fixes it.

I am not baller. I just got lucky and somehow ended up with two 5950X's for free. This would be extremely goofy like 5950X and GTX 970 had that not happened.

I was happily browsing away with my Firefox 115.5.X (can't find my notes of what the X is) on my Windows 7 Ultimate 32 bit machine. Then I noticed 'updater.exe' running when I logged on a few weeks ago. Then a few days after that, I got a popup apparently from Firefox, with the cute fox, telling me I had an update available. And another popup yesterday, without the cute fox, asking me to update.

Then Firefox added a bookmark for me, to my bookmarks, that I could click on to get the update ! I wanted to know what exact version I had of Firefox, so I went to 'help, about' and it started to download the new version, without me agreeing to it !! I x'ed out of Firefox and shut down the whole computer. Started computer up again, and 'so far' do not have any more nags. I can't even find out what version of FF I have !

About a year ago, when I was setting up my Win 7 computer, I checked to see what the latest version of FF would be, that was compatible with my machine, and it was Firefox 15.5 something. I installed it then, and FF has been fine.

I don't want to risk downloading whatever FF wants to download. Why fix what isn't broken right ? What is the benefit, if any? If I decide to use the new version, is it better to download it from the nag prompt, or download from an internet site of my own choosing ?
What is the newest version of Firefox I can run on my 32 bit machine with 2.0 Gig ram and 2.7 Gig CPU ?

I really don't want to break what isn't broken, or go through many hoops just to get back to what I had, if the new version doesn't install right, etc, etc, etc. Headaches.

I see that FF has extended support for Windows 7 into April, 2025, which I suppose is why they are even nagging me to update. Thoughts? Should I download the update? Thanks in advance.

- - - Updated - - -

Update: I got tired of researching, and just clicked on the download nag. It tried to download FF 115.17.0 and I got a 'failed, unknown reason' message.

Luckily FF is still working for me. Should I just keep dismissing the nag popup?

Anyone else successfully downloading 115.17.0 ?

Thanks

10/31/2024 update: I went to the Mozilla discussion group, found some other folks with the same problem, and got some good advice to go to a certain address and download an exe file, which fixed my problem !

Re: Help -> About Firefox -> Update to 115.17.0esr... - Mozilla Connect.

Just adding this in case one or two fellow travelers have the 115.17.0 problem.

I read that 115.33.0 in February 2026 will be the last ESR 115 version for Windows 7.
With unofficial security updates for Windows 7 ending in January 2026, I doubt that Mozilla will continue ESR 115 support further into 2026.
Time will tell.

I agree with you.
It is time to move up to Windows 10 or Windows 11.
I have already begin making the switch in most of my PCs.

Thanks for posting that information.
I no longer use Windows 7, but I have a few elderly friends who do, so I will make them aware of that.

Updates will be delivered through the ESR channel until the end of August 2026. It was previously announced that support would end in February 2026, but in order to ensure our users can continue to browse the web, we will extend support for Firefox for these operating systems for another six months and then re-evaluate.

That note about browsing the web is funny. FF 115 will still work even after support. What matters are websites supporting it. Some have already stopped supporting it. Google drive started throwing an unsupported browser banner. I guess they haven't gotten the memo.
