Hi everyone....

I hope someone can explain this to me.
When I clicked on the iconfor "new updates available) there was "security update for Internet Explorer 9 for Windows 7 64 bit KB2964358"
When I clicked on the "more information" it states that the know issue is that IE will crash if certain other updates were not installed (see below):

Known issues with this security update

  • Internet Explorer will crash if you try to install this security update on a Windows 7-based system that does not already have security update 2929437 installed. To avoid this issue, take either of the following actions:
    • Install security update 2929437, and then install security update 2964358. For more information about security update 2929437, click the following article number to view the article in the Microsoft Knowledge Base: 2929437(Description of the security update for Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: April 8, 2014 )
Description of the security update for Internet Explorer 11 on Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2: April 8, 2014
    • Install security update 2964444 instead of security update 2964358. Security update 2964444 is intended for systems that do not have security update 2929437 installed.

  • I checked on my installed updates and I do not have KB2964444 or KB292437 installed, nor are these updates are shown to be available for installation under my Windows updates.
Also, this latest update (KB2964358) does not have a check marl next to it ( to suggest it is a critical update).

I googled for KB2964444 and KB292437 which brings me to the Micosoft website and their descriptions..but do not see anywhere on the pages to download them.

My question is: what do I need to download for this latest IE patch and where to find them or do I not need to install this latest patch ( maybe MS will issue any patch?)

I appologize if this seems like a dumb question....I am not understanding this latest IE patch and its prerequisites.
I have WIndows 7 Ultime 64 bit and Internet Explorer 9.

I would appreciate your advice...thank you

Joe

And yet malware coming into your computer via other vectors can still make use of IE's components :-(

If you don't use IE, then why not install IE11?

I've no reason to install a newer version of software I don't use.
UPDATE: I apologize for such a stupid reply. After all these years, you'd think that I'd remember that a lot of code used by IE is also part of Windows, and in a way, updating one is like updating the other. I've updated to IE 11 thanks to your insight.

My understanding is "IE" is built into Windows 7.
You can not use it, disable it, not update it, whatever you want ...
I don't use IE as my primary browser, but I do keep my PCs updated including IE updates ...

I've updated a few systems now with this update.
Most of these systems updated with no reboot required.
One system required a reboot, MS Office Outlook and Excel were open while installing the update on that system ...

I don't know the internals of Windows (Bill forgot to tell me) and what programs and processes depend on other programs and processes and their UPDATES ...

I always install all the Windows updates & have done so for years. I must admit I have never had a problem with any update & fiddling around hiding some & not others is time consuming & seems in the long run to cause problems.

I look at it from the point of view that if MS did not think an update was important then they would not go to the trouble of suggesting that all the millions of users should install it.
