latest Windows critical update issue

I run a very tight ship thanks to you folks and I keep a regular check on my services page to make sure nothing is starting that shouldn't. Consequently, although I don't know what half of them do, I am aware of most of the services I have starting automatically and manually. Today, when I checked, I discovered stuff has been starting manually that hadn't been in the recent past; at least I think this is the case. So my question is: has anything happened with this last critical update (13/12/13) that might cause extra services to start manually without my participation.

A lot of things will cause services to start when in 'manual start' mode - and may have nothing whatever to do with updates.
There is a misapprehension that this setting means that the service will only start when the user requests it - this is not true. It simply means that the service doesn't start until something else triggers it.

Please give examples where the behaviour you believe has changed.

yes, thank-you, I used to wonder who was starting these services but realised they were semi-automatic.
I mentioned the updates because as far as I am aware, nothing else has changed on my system and if it has I want to know why because I didn't do it.
I always reference Black Viper's checklist and when it indicates no-default start for my OS I worry a bit.
Would you believe I have just opened Services to give an example of the additional items and the list has returned to its old self. Diagnostic System Host was one of the examples as was Virtual Disc, Volume Shadow Copy, Win HTTP Web Proxy..., Block Level Backup Engine et al.
Has Windows been performing some routine maintenance in the background that I just happened to notice?

Probably - it does a lot of work in the background while the system is idle, such as performance checks, indexing and clean-ups.

I always reference Black Viper's checklist

Black Vipers List have got many in trouble.

Please follow NoelDP suggestions. Using Black Viper and NoelDP suggestions at the same time will cause problems.
I will go back to watching.

I actually use the BV lists myself - as a guide, not a recommendation
The list is great - but it only lists what's possible, not what's good for either you or the machine.

There's nothing better than a judicious dose of paranoia. I like a clean machine; but I am permanently aware of the degree of ignorance I display when I'm messing with my system, so I always err on the side of extreme caution. Up until now, with you folks helping me along, I seem to have stayed out of trouble. I look at all the bloatware and etc running on some people's machines and I wonder how they ever manage to boot up.
