Leave Vista for W7 and delete the old partition

Hi all,

I had Vista running on my pc, so I made a new partition on my hard drive and installed W7 x64 on it. Since then, I have a dualboot Vista/W7.

W7 is great, so now I would like to delete the first partition and keep the 2d one as my main partition with W7 on it. Is it possible to delete the first partition from the W7 OS (which runs on the second partition) ? Will I be able to reboot ? Is there some kind of risk ?

Hi FabFabFab and welcome to the forum

Not quite sure what you want to do. If you just want W7 to use the whole hard drive you could just format and do a fresh install of W7.
Or you could use something like gparted or easybcd to re arrange the partitions.

However I'd hang on to Vista.
For one thing it's rock solid especially with SP2. For another it still feels luxurious compared to W7.

But mainly because there's bound to be an upgrade offer from Vista to W7 making it much cheaper for you.

If you do decide to wipe Vista make sure you back up everything you want to keep.

I know what you are saying here but it's safer to just start from a fresh install. It is always the best way to go. I know it's the slower way, but safest as well. Worth the extra hour or 2.

You won't be able to delete the Vista partition from Windows 7, it contains system files for W7.
As John said, keeping Vista will give you a cheaper upgrade option.
Windows 7 will be available October 22, so hang in there, later you can delete the W7 partition from Vista and upgrade to the new release of W7.

Clean Install

I recently decided to delete my Vista Ultimate partition from my Laptop. It ran horribly compared to W7 RC x64. Especially when I using all the Adobe products. dreamweaver, flash, flex, PS, Fw etc. Those programs crashed all the time not once since I did a clean install with W7 x64. I reccomend just going with the RC runs great.

That's true. The bootloader is probably on the Vista partition. So the system wouldn't be able to boot if he deleted it.

You could fix that with something like BartPE and the Windows 7 DVD restore tools, if you really wanted to.

Or just make the other partition active using disk management, then clean install Win7 on that partition.
