Sequel to Best-Selling Co-op Thriller Coming This Holiday

June 1, 2009 - Valve, creators of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today announced Left 4 Dead 2 (L4D2), the sequel to the best-selling and critically-acclaimed co-operative multiplayer thriller.

Coming exclusively to Xbox 360 and PC, L4D2 promises to set a new benchmark for co-operative action games and become one of 2009's marquee titles.

"A large part of how Left 4 Dead became 2008's top-selling new IP on Xbox 360 and the PC was the custom-tailored gameplay made possible by the AI Director," said Gabe Newell, president and co-founder of Valve. "With the knowledge gained from creating the original, new technology, and a passionate team, L4D2 will set a new benchmark for cooperative action games."

Set for release on November 17, the title adds melee combat to enable deeper co-operative gameplay, with items such as a chainsaw, frying pan, axe, baseball bat, and more.

Introducing the AI Director 2.0, L4D's dynamic gameplay is taken to the next level by giving the Director the ability to procedurally change weather effects, world objects, and pathways in addition to tailoring the enemy population, effects, and sounds to match the players' performance. The result is a unique game session custom fitted to provide a satisfying and uniquely challenging experience each time the game is played.

Featuring new Survivors, boss zombies, weapons, and items, Left 4 Dead 2 offers a much larger game than the original with more co-operative campaigns, more Versus campaigns, and maps for Survival mode available at launch.

Supported by a $10+ million marketing campaign, Left 4 Dead has sold over 2.5 million retail copies since it was released in November of 2008. Left 4 Dead 2 is targeted for release on Xbox 360 and the PC on November 17, 2009, and will be launched worldwide with a multi-million dollar marketing campaign across TV, Outdoor, and Online.

"Left 4 Dead was backed by our most aggressive advertising campaign to date, and resulted in a top 5 showing on two platforms during holiday 2008," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing at Valve. "Left 4 Dead 2 is a larger game and will be supported with even more consumer and retail advertising programs than the original."

Left 4 Dead 2 will be featured as the cover story on PC Gamer and Official Xbox Magazines this month.

I think they should have given the first one more content before they revealed that they were busy making content for the second one instead. Sort of feels like the first one is a paid demo for the complete game which is left for dead 2.

still have yet to play No.1 ....... i was gonna grab a copy but the fact its only multiplayer put me off....., i hear its quite epic with a good team though.

Yes success depends on good teamwork a great deal, it does have a single player campaign though.

I feel like they could've just waited these months and just made the first RIGHT.

I won't be buying the sequel.
A f'n ripoff, if you ask me.

Its a good concept game but if you don;t have a team to play with its no fun. Sounds to be they are just taking what should have been an add-on pack and releasing it as a new game. Guess that could be due to they released it for 360 too and are thinking that not everyone with a 360 has enough drive space to spare for an add on pack so they will just charge more for a somewhat same game different items and AI. Well I hope it works for them. Guess I'll also wait for the L4D to go to $20 before i grab a copy.

you'll definitely over-pay if you go through steam. they still charge $40 for l4d. i got mine for 20-25 bucks at target. prolly the same at wal-mart too.

I actually bought mine retail @ Wal-Mart and with taxes, it was a little more expensive than it would've been over Steam.
This was around January so I think that's when L4D was reduced to $39.99.

Thanks for the info, I'll just wait for steam to do one of those sales that they do, I just got COD WaW a few weeks ago for $25 don't mind paying that price for a mostly online game and not having to carry a cd/dvd with me everywhere cause its a laptop lol

i dont think i would have bought it if it was more than $35, but l4d is too much fun, not to play. sucks they didnt add more campaigns, before making a new game....

About half of my games I buy off of Steam and the physical copies, I just make them into images and mount 'em.

...I'll probably end up getting L4D2 anyways, regardless how I feel about the first.

It must be because L4D has sold as well as it has that they're jumping right to a sequel.
They know most of us will rush out and buy it once it's released.

SOOO agreeed! except the buying the game though. I saw the trailers, whoopty dooo. new skins and new weapons. it's the same crap - CROUCH and MELEE. the game has such a low replay value is ridiculous. it's on par with diablo2 as far as Normal Vs Nightmare Vs Hell difficulty goes. I just want more content out of games. Gladly pay for them. I just get annoyed when you get a game and it doesn't even keep you busy for 3 days. had the same problem with COD4 single player. WAY short. but multiplayer is bad ass. just wish there more stock maps.
