I have restored before accidental SneakWare install and it seemed to work OK, although I didn't need to disable MSE.

There are risks to restoring if there is infection involved since it can get into Restore Points. So I'd scan for infection first just to be safest.

Yeah I've never had to disable my AV's as well. Have Norton on my Win 8.1 machine and MSE on the W7 machine.

And count me for Restore Point as well

That's interesting. I need to disable tamper protection in Norton for an RP to complete successfully. That may have changed in recent versions as I just automatically do that now.

Can't hurt. Less likely to have issues. Although antivirus companies should be well aware of this feature, it has been around for a long time.

I don't know; I've been mainly using restore points since Win 7 was released. Never once did I ever have to disable any AV for it to work, whether creating or restoring. And I've not seen any issues under Windows 8/8.1 running with NIS 2013 or 14 now.

Must be one of those freak things you encountered

I'm running Avast and I have no problems creating new Restore Points.

With reference to my earlier posts, I do manually create Restore Points in addition to the automatic system created ones.
I used one last week without any issues.
I just don't rely on them.

And it is perfectly legal for anyone to couple freeware together, which you agree to download because you clicked the link that they offered. It is illegal for people to intentionally install malware on your computer, though I suspect with our broad definition of malware, some of it may even be legal

The solution is simple, NEVER, EVER use third party sites for downloading programs. ALWAYS go to the OFFICIAL developer site and get a direct download there, that's warranted to at least haven't being tampered by someone else.
Of course, nothing prevents that those can still be infected by something else by the original developer too, but the vast majority aren't, and you are sure you're getting the latest version too. Really, if you're still using CNET or any such sites to get software available in their official homepage, you're asking for problems.

I would doubt if some software developer was unable to provide their own official downloads, relying only on third party crapware sites for distribution. It's often preferable to look for more serious alternatives in those cases.

It wasn't always a direct download from them. Your link is a direct download, I believe a link to a download is the preferred method here.
